i have just set the edelbrock intake on a 351 and it sits 10" from the highest point on the timing cover to the top of the throttle body without the air cleaner . measuring an installed 302 with the explorer intake from the top of the timing cover to the top is the same 10". as close as i can tell the 302 has 1.5 inches clearance to the hoods center support channel . , didnt really want to use a scoop but i dont think there's any way an air cleaner will fit as is.
i had posted before on this and thought i had no problems but the point of reference as the timing cover is more accurate as they are interchangeable, 302/351, previously i had used the valley height and that is where they differ. Until i install the 351 i really dont know what the final number will be the way things work out.

A 302 will give about an inch more clearance and if the hood's center support was moved one might find an air cleaner to fit.
If anyone has another solution i would appreciate it. Thanks..

No suggestion exactly, but results are probably similar to yours. 351W with 1” body lift. Got an edelbrock drop base air cleaner that came with a 3” tall element. I don’t think it was a very aggressive drop, but wouldn’t clear stock good even with a 2” element.

Decided my hood wasn’t in super good shape anyhow so I got a BD mid rise hood. That clears with 2” element, but I don’t think the 3” would clear without a different base or some other work.

The original Bronco air cleaner will give you the most room under the hood. My 351 fits with no body lift and a stock steel hood. I found that the 351 4bbl intake from a '69 Mustang is the best intake for hood clearance. The '84-'86 5.8 4V HO cast iron truck intake is nearly as good, but has EGR, so the exhaust hole in the carb. mounting platform has to be blocked on none EGR engines. I also found that the Edelbrock 351 Perfrmer EGR aluminum intake works. The EGR has to be plugged on these too. The regular Performer won't fit, even with a Bronco air cleaner.

thanks. Just posting to point out the issue with this system the intake is an air gap that ads to height also. 351 is not installed yet have to wait on the 4r70w build which will alter the rear mounts so i can look at lowering the front mounts at that time. i dont expect much there without major problems. all my existing 302 measurements are with a 1" body lift not mentioned earlier .
