Question

Does the floor go over the inner rocker panel edge or does the floor go down and then the inner panel lays over it ?

Yes from the factory the inner rocker goes over the floor pan. We couldn't get these pans to fit correctly under the lip so we went on top.

Just so you know that the Explorer pkg did first appear in '72.

And X would have been the paint code for Durango tan that year. Durango tan became Goldenrod in 1973, but kept the X identification.

Post up pics of of seat upholstery. I'm willing to bet it's random ginger.

And if you want to just send me that grill, I won't complain. My Durango tan truck with mostly original paint has a little boo boo on that part.

Gonna be watching this one close. Take lots of pics.

I was leaning toward ginger myself....

OK this is interesting,
I came back and looked at it again and it is definitely looks like a X. So I got curious and check a spot and there is tan underneath the yellow. This might be factory sealer or something because there is not any primer under the tan. The lower part of the dash is tan. I really don't think its been painted before, because it is yellow everywhere - even inside the taillight buckets, If you look at the first pics you can see the yellow is all under the dash, its in the engine bay, everywhere. I checked the frame vin and it matches the glovebox and it still has the door jam sticker.
So I don't know if it was stamped wrong, painted wrong, or what.

"half cab" I was thinking the Explorer started in 73. I don't think its an Explorer because if I remember right they only came blue or copper and had the Explorer stripes.

Heres a pic of the seat or what is left of it.

Project "Old Yellar" Resurecting one of our parts truck

1972 was actually the first year to start the Explorer option. Your seats are most definitely from a 72 Explorer Sport. It's a one year, one option only fabric pattern.

There are a couple of threads out there that cover this particular anomaly and if I weren't on my phone I'd link to them.

Cool - so the Ranger option would not have had these seats. Did they make any Explorers in any color beside blue and copper and/or without stripes.
Definitely link me up if you find them.

oh ok so this "yellowish" color is Durango Tan.

Well then, Yes, I too do believe this is an Explorer sport. I thought I knew a lot about Broncos. Thanks for the schooling ;D;D:eek::eek:

So how rare are these?

They are pretty rare it was a one year option I have seen one in real life and it was nice. I have seen a few more on the web but none that were nice it would be cool to put back original.

Yeah Ive been checking and this is def. an Explorer sport. It has the 84 body code, which I think the 8 is the special interior and the X paint code. The only prob is I would have a really hard time putting it back original with all the chrome and special interior. Alot of this Bronco is missing or rotten. We originally bought it as a parts truck. Luckily we have collected alot of extra body panels through the years. I was thinking maybe a restomod version of the it, but even that will be difficult with that color. Im building it to sell, so I have to decide what is best. I love having a rare truck, but this has made my build design decisions much harder.

The most difficult piece you'll have to find would be the interior material. No one reproduces it. Once a year or so a seat or two will pop up.

Build it as you see fit. The '72 Explorer Sport, while an oddball/rare bird, really commands no better money than most other Broncos. At least as far as I have seen. It's more a conversation piece for those who enjoy discussing such weird things.

Now, if this were an early '66 roadster or a Baja...

SUPER RARE !!! go retro /original on it as much possible as you can !! seats and interior go white and let the next custodian bring it back to orig. if he so fancies !!!

Thanks, I did some digging last night and found these. I was hoping they were a little more like plaid. I'm trying to design a restomod custom version of the Explorer sport. So I'm trying to piece it all together
