to satisfy some people's curiosity I am asking this. if you ordered say a rebuilt transmission or had one rebuilt and it came to you sealed up ready to be installed. would you open it up anyway costing a gasket, to have a look inside? or trust that everything is ok and just install it.

Depends on how much you trust the rebuilder. A gasket costs nothing if it makes you feel better.

Lots of horror stories out there. But generally you should be able to trust those you order from.
With so many just out to cut corners though, it's hard to say. I agree a gasket is cheap. Not sure what you would expect to see in regard to small stuff (like clearances and all new parts) but if anything was really egregious it would be nice to know before taking all that time and effort to install it.

Professional rebuilding company? Private party that said the previous owner had it rebuilt? Makes a big difference.

I've worked with my local rebuilder on many different projects and I know that he stands behind his work. I took my '97 4R70W over to him to rebuild and now it awaits to be installed.

The questions is would opening it up avoid any warranty. Make sure to check or add fluid. Most ship empty.
