I have contemplated doing this as well. Kyle Malone is happy with his, but I'm real happy with my C6. We'll see how the 3 link turns out on mine...the road manners are supposed to be better than the leafs. With having one sitting in my shop ready to go, it's hard to say no!

Most of the mustang guys use the manual vb. Silverfox also suggested I use a manual vb on my AOD to avoid the worry of fluid pressure.

-He is best known for his valve body work in the mustang world.

-Did you explain to him what your application was for?

-My old trans guy put a converter with a stall in ( I don't recall what rpm it was) my AOD and it drives so smoothly. If I had a full lockup, I'd be making tire noise all the time with my mildly modded motor.

-If your down south you may want to try Novotny transmissions and there is another guy that builds up the Ford transmissions down SoCal too. I'll try to find teh name.

You don't understand a lock up convertor. The lockup is there to take out the slippage while cruising. Makes for a more efficient transmission. One that runs cooler as well. Very modern automatics (generation newer then the 4R70W) are so efficient at highway speeds that they actually need a heater to keep the oil warmed up.

The lockup convertor won't make shifts harsher. Usually it is the other way around. The convertor tends to be a little looser so things perform better, but they can get away with this since they can lock for effiency.

The AOD has a bastard wierd lockup feature. It isn't selectable. First 2 gears has no lockup. Overdrive is 100% locked no matter what. 3rd is a hybrid powerflow through both locked and unlocked paths that gives a 60% lockup. inginues idea, not the most pratical, nobody uses that idea anymore and they all use the lockup convertor it that gives you any idea which is the better choice.

Not ready to drop $3-4grand on a tranny swap. Will order the baumann controller and start looking for a 4r70w. Hope I can get a good one, drop it in, and do minor mods to it later. Seems the more logical route to go.

I went with the 4R70W and the Baumann controller.

hook up is easy and not really that many extra wires to deal with (even with EFI)

I love being able to lock out the OD which I do with a simple toggle switch

Baumann controller has other benefits like trans temp, voltage, TPS position (with EFI of course), position (indicated vs actual)

you won't be sorry if you go this route

Running 4R70W, 351W w/ explorer front end, long tubes, D20, and 4.56 w/ 35's. I love it. Everything fits fine though, depending on long tube brand, you may be close to trans pan @ collector flange. One day I will go with different gears but and happy as is.

So here is the parts list. Let me know if I forgot something?
Junkyard trans with torque converter, dipstick, engine plate, flex plate, starter, ( wondering if I should get cooler lines, wiring, and crossmember?)
Baumann controller and harness
Holley tps
Lokar kit to make column shifter work
I already have atlas case,3/4"spacer, and will need to have my wh driveshafts dealt with. Will probably have to redo my new exhaust, and hope the thorley headers will fit,if not i have some b.c. Headers.I have a crossmember made from a zf crossmember for a c6 almost looks like it will work.
Other than fluids anything I'm forgetting?

the only other suggestions i would make are put a 90^ fitting on vent tube on top and also put 90^ fittings on the fluid lines. I had interference issues on the the fluid lines with my exhaust 90^ fitting fixed that and gave plenty of room. Stock dipstick works fine. I running a junkyard 4r something like 110k on it when i put it in. has been working great behind a mild 351. You might also consider a j mod while the tranny is out also. This will help it shift faster i need to do this, mine doesn't shift fast enough above 5000 rpms.

What trans are you running now? If it's a C4 then the flexplate is the same. Starter and engine plate are a "maybe the same." I used cooler lines from an Explorer 4r70w on mine and the pre made bends were pretty close to working on the Bronco....had to make some slight mods to them right near the engine mounts. I tried Thorley LT's on mine and they were a very tight fit. Pass side had to be in before the engine was dropped in. I decided to not use them and went with the BC's....easy fit.
