About to change out the busted rear axle on the 66. With the bearing being outside the seal does it need grease or anything? Got new axle from wh with new bearing pressed on.

Hi, so you broke the old axle and got it all out.
You could gently slide the new axle in.
A little lube on the seal couldn't hurt.
Even if you didn't lose any rear end fluid, you should check the level before driving.
Good luck

Steve, if it is the style bearing I'm thinking of, they are sealed and don't get any lube from the rear end.

I plan on pulling the third member to check it out before the axles go in. I looked at the new axle and bearing and the bearing looks sealed. Just wanted to make sure.

And how long have you been doing this stuff?;D

Its been a while since I pulled a rear end apart. Last time it was the full floater on my 72 to add outer seals. The warn full floaters do spin art on the tires if you dont run seals. On that I had to grease the bearings being on the spindle. Never hurts to ask. Well maybe a little on the pride.
