Rear view mirror adhesive

I put a new windshield in my truck a few years back. I’ve tried every adhesive I can find with no luck. The longest I’ve had a mirror stay is about 9 month. I’ll come out to the truck and the mirror is on the floor. Never had that issue before. Glued lots of buttons back on in other trucks. Any recommendations on a special adhesive I can try? Found the mirror on the floor this weekend. I had just reinstalled it before super cel.

Well that new clear flex tape may just be the answer.


Not sticking to the glass. I’ve cleaned the glass. Applied the primers, etc all with no luck.

I got tired of re-gluing mine on the 72. I ended up buying one of those baby mirrors with the suction cup for checking on the rear child seat as a joke. It's like 2"x4". I ended up liking it and it stays on the window pretty well.

I used the glass shop as well. The professional stuff holds up.

Sand the back of the button, clean the glass with a razor blade and then clean the glass again with acetone. put button in place and put some masking tape around it. Then put the primer on both the button and the glass. What ever you do don't touch anything with your bare hands or you will compromise the bond. Then place the button with adhesive on it in place and tape it in place so it doesn't move. When putting the button on push it down before taping but not so hard to squeeze out all the glue. Now let it cure a couple of days before putting weight on it.

AZ, one of the worst places for that glue. But I make it work. Took some mistakes to learn, but finally got it to stay.

Follow (most) of the instructions.
Mark the outside with tape so you get the right spot. Mirror in the wrong place sucks.
Clean. Razor blade. Use the supplied cleaner exactly like the instructions say to.
Put the drop of glue on the button and place it on the glass. DO NOT MASH. Light press only. A little masking tape to hold it in place. If you mash you squeeze most of the glue out and it WILL fail. This is the biggest mistake made.
The one instruction to ignore, "ready in 30 minutes". BS! Park in the sun for a full day. Even an overcast day. Glue is UV cured.
After a day slip on the mirror and snug the screw. Doesn't need to be real tight, just snug. Don't want to flex the bracket.

Doing that with the normal parts store mirror glue I have not lost a mirror in over 15 years now. Even the stuff that sits in the sun for years holds up. The learning curve to figure this out, I got to install the same mirror several times until I figured out what was failing and corrected it.

This is what I have found also....Follow the directions exactly....don't put the primer (catalyst) on both...only the glass. Another thing I have found through trial and error is with a new windshield, I have had to use 1000 grit paper and sand the glass just where the button would be. The little scratches seems to be just what the adhesive needed... Good luck Brett!

let setup overnight before mounting mirror.

Great advice guys, I am about to mount mine. So this thread answered a lot of my question s except for this:
This is a little off topic but I am assuming it is mounting on the center line of the window but how far down from the top oud you mount it?

Don't know. Never got it right. I went too high and can only see cars tailgating me.

Also if the button is too high you might not be able to slide the mirror on it...I have about 1/8" to spare!

My re-glued mirror fell over last month... if (when) this one fails I'm going to the local glass shop...

I use the Duro 5 minute epoxy in the hypo tubes. Lasts until the windshield needs replacing.
Trick is to clean the glass and puck really well with a razor blade then alcohol.

Agreed on scuffing and cleaning. I used this stuff on my truck. Hasn’t come off yet, 3 summers 110+ heat on the beach. It was like 5 bucks. Old guy hot rodder told me about it.
