Rebuilding doors

The doors on my 76 are in pretty bad shape. The passenger side can only be locked and unlocked from the inside. The driver side is almost as bad. There have been a few times I had to climb through the tailgate to get in. I am thinking of replacing the locks and cores on both doors. Should I also try to replace all the other stuff in the door while I have the doors apart? It doesn't look like there is a lot of room to work in there. Are parts available? I am just fishing for comments from any of you guys that may have done this to your trucks.

Remove the mechanisms and clean them, usually they are gunked up with 30 years of dust, dirt, paint lube and under coating.

Exactly what I would reccomend . Those latches are expensive--much more than a can of WD-40. Try it first.

You would not believe how much this will help. Just did mine again and they are working as good as new. The rods from the door handle stretch over time and need to be adjusted from time to time. A couple of threads sometime make a world of difference.

The plungers on door handles are bad about wearing out. These make it very hard to get doors to work at all. Tear all the mechanisms out clean them in paint thinner(cheapest of all parts cleaners). Replace all of the plastic retainers and maybe get new outside door handles. They are really cheap compared to all of the other parts. You wont believe the difference when done. Be sure to lubricate the mechanisms with lithium or molybdnum disulfide.

I agree with these guys. The passenger side door on my Bronco would not work at all. I thought it was misaligned or something. I took off the inner door panel and sprayed all of the internal mechanisms with some silicon lube. Worked like a charm. Now the door works great. I would do this before you buy any parts.
