Rough shift into reverse and hard time finding 2nd

My transmission shifts roughly into reverse. I recently pulled the transmission pan due to a leaky gasket. I changed filter and oil, and now it seems like it has trouble finding second. It kind of revs and eventually finds the gear. I wonder if the PO had put in non-TypeF fluid, and what this might do? Any ideas? - thanks!
