Rust Encapsulate on C-Bushing Mounting Surface

Hi Forums,

I am replacing my c-bushings with 4-degree poly bushings from @NicksTrix @ North East Classic Ford. I already have refurbished radius arms also from Nick. I will need to clean up scaling from the mounting surface axle side. I want to use a rust encapsule product, such as Por-15, on the mounting surface to protect it. I DO NOT want to have to go through the c-bushing process again for some time. Will using a product, such as POR-15, create any issues with the bushing mounting process, or with my caster?

Best,
Tony

I mean how bad are the mounting side surfaces? I've never seen perfectly smooth rust free ones. I'd say unless you can be sure it's dry, it would stick to the bushing?

No matter what you end up with, I wouldn’t just encapsulate scale and crust. I would remove it if possible.
Sometimes it’s as easy as chipping it off, while sometimes it needs a bit of grinding.
How bad is it actually? Got pictures?

If it’s not too bad then yes, you can probably just use POR-15 over it.
My problem with POR-15 products in this situation though, is that they are typically fairly thick. You don’t really want a heavy layer of anything squeezing in the bushings.
I don’t think it would distort them enough to affect your caster, but it might make your squeeze out.

My go to for surface rust is a wire wheel (ideally on an angle grinder) but drill at minimum. Get all the scale and loose stuff off. I’ll then treat with an acetic acid to covert the rust.

Wash and dry it then either RustEncapsulator or POR15 finished with a topcoat.

the one time that I had something urethane fitted onto something with POR-15 on it it was very clear that it was going to squeak badly. Might test this before committing to it.

I prefer the fiber discs. Maybe start with a wire brush on a grinder but finish with the rotary discs. Personally I would not paint and instead trust the bushings moving during use to keep the rust down. But then again I live in southern California and on the three days a year that it rains the Bronco just stays in the garage.
