Looking for a recommendation for a pair of SAE rated driving lights. Really want a pair of 6” light bars for usable driving lights that are low profile. Of course if I don’t have to spend $300 for them is better but if that’s what it takes so be it.

I have some Baja Designs Squadron Pro Combo lights on two trucks. One is the set on the Camper. They are not what you're asking for, but there is an SAE version offered. If the SAE version is as good (no reason to doubt that), just lower light output then I'd suggest those. As bonus they aren't quite as spendy as the Pro's either.

Those second gen CTD HL's are pert near useless, and I was having a problem with them tripping a breaker that I could not find. They'd come right back on, but the shriek from the co-pilot's seat was getting old. After putting the Squad Pro's on the truck the co-pilot did not notice when the breaker tripped. Those two small lights make better HL's than the HL's are. Two HL switches later I finally got one that works and doesn't trip the breaker.

Just curious, why do you specifically want/need SAE conforming lights? Street legal? Race requirements? Or simply just a better beam pattern??

Just beam pattern. We get a lot of fog and wide open darkness so looking for something that can be used all the time, regardless of traffic conditions.

FWIW I've been really happy with where BD's "Driving/Combo" lens puts the light. They reach out about as far as the lows while also getting into the ditches. However, I have yet to drive them in really thick fog. There was a recent Group Buy on BD products and I debated myself a lot on whether to buy the Squad Sport's (3165 lumens) or the Squad Pro's (4095 lumens) for the Wagon. I have occasionally been flashed with the Pro's, but pulling them in a little seems to have stopped that. The lens of choice was never in question. I note that any of the four lens options, Spot, Driving/Combo, Work, & Wide Cornering for either light can be had in amber if that's a preference.

Thanks for the input, still looking and deciding

If I had thought this project through more, I’d of been in on that group buy….

White/clear is the preferred lens. Even the fog is usually just a short distance out of our little valley and most of the use is on road at night. If it is moving off highway after dark it will either be leading or something went arwry that wasn’t supposed to happen😂
