Snap rings

I'm putting the front end of my '77 back together and feel like I'm missing a snap ring. (It's a Dana 44) I put the parts in two separate boxes to keep things in order. Pulled both boxes and noticed there are two different size snap rings in one box and only one size snap ring in the other box. It's been so long I can't remember...

Stupid question, does one side of the hub require two snap rings and the other require one? I took a picture of the parts as I disassembled the hubs. If you look close enough, one side has two snap rings and the other side has one.

Thank you,
George

The large lock ring is essential to retain the locking assembly inside the hub.

The small, axle size snap ring, is a factory part that goes in the groove at the end of the axle shaft near the end of the spindle. But if you are using aftermarket locking hubs, or aftermarket disc brakes, you probably cannot put the small snap ring back on.

In looking at your pictures, it looks like you have both sizes for both sides.
Am I seeing something wrong?

But you are missing the big spring for one side. You should probably find an exploded view in one of the manuals or online.

It’s different between factory Spicer hubs and aftermarket hubs such as Warn. For aftermarket you do not use those big springs. For factory lockouts you do.

I circled the two on the left and the one on the right. Hopefully you can see the two on the left in the circle.

I have the other big spring, it's not in the picture. It's off to the right.

Thank you. Do you guys have the large lock ring? I put both rings side by side and included a picture.

George

Never seen the large one in a stock lockout. Not sure what it's for, unless for a Warn setup not currently on the vehicle.
Only actual snap ring fits on the end of the axle shaft. From here it looks like the smaller one, but you can tell once you test-fit each one.
Whichever one fits is the size you need. If it don't fit, it don't belong...

I'm going to do what Paul suggested and put everything back together and what's left over, I don't need. Somehow got scooped up in the disassembly process. 😄
