I'm back on the road but my new speedo is not working. I pulled the speedo drive out of the T-case[VSS] to make sure that the gear was OK and that the drive gear in the T-case was OK too. Now heres the question I put my big deget in the hole to check the drive gear and it turns free the gear that is. I checked the service manuel and its not to clear but I would think the gear should not turn free like that. Before I tare into it I though I ask.

If it's the plastic gear they can break loose and spin. Find another one with the same number of teeth.

The gear on the output shaft. It has a steel sleeve that it's supposed to be bonded to but I've seen a few that have separated.

Just to let evey one know it wasn't the gear. I guess when you have fresh gear lub on your finger and a 40 year old gear thats as smooth as a babys butt you think its turning. Also the gear was solid steel. I wound up tracing it down to a bad ground on the VSS to my Autometer elc speedo.
