Hi guys,

So the starter went out on my 1971 /302 manual bronco.

Looking around I see there is a upgrade for the starter. Does anyone know the part number for so I can get one from the parts house. Or do I need to go through the vender sites here.

Thanks
Guys

Not sure on the part number for your application, but I would highly recommend a mini high torque starter. I can't say enough good things about mine, which was a cheap ebay special.

Highly agree with Eric - I'll never replace another starter with the " full size " one ever again !

I just installed a new mini starter from Tom's last week, it's quick to wire and I can definitely tell it spins much faster. It does sound a bit different than the stock starter, but nothing I can't get used to. None of my local stores had or could get me the mini version.

Mini/PMGR/High torque/gear reduction. Whatever you want to call it, GET ONE! Great upgrade. I bought mine new off ebay for about $50.

I bought one from the pick-n-pull for $25 out of an Explorer with 100k or so. It works awesome with the minor re-wire and has served me several years. I like the OEM stuff - a $50 brand new e-bay starter scares the crap out of me.

Keep in mind that one is for an automatic. The OP clearly stated in the first post he has a 3-speed manual transmission. So that Explorer starter will not work for him.

I've gotten a couple of different aftermarket ones over the years. They have all been good to me. Often the quick install is to jump the intermal solenoid to the big post on the starter. That works, poorly. The starter tends to hang up on the flywheel when you start the engine doing that. Hook the big post up as before but move it from switched to unswitched sides at the old solenoid. Run a new wire from the switched side of the solenoid (the old starter feed) and run that to the solenoid on the starter. That works. Trying to remove the old solenois completely you loose the "I" post off the old solenoid and that can cause ignition issues while starting.

Not to hijack your thread, but those with gear reduction starters: What is your cranking rpm?

I'm cranking ~200 rpm with a stock-style starter on a 351 with 9:1 compression. I would like to get a little more speed out of it if possible.

Went to the local starter rebuild shop to get my stock starter rebuilt. The owner said that he had a rebuilt mini starter for $80.00 which was about $30.00 more than a stock rebuild. Best $30.00 I evert spent. Easy to install, especially with aftermarket headers.

Sorry my mistake - Ford and the different starters for manual or auto got me.
