How hard is it to replace the power steering oil seal in the nose of the box? I have one that is leaking and would like to fix it.

Gaspig is the resident expert on this one. In fact he gave me a seal to replace the one on my leaking manual gear box. Haven't tried it yet but he told me you need to pull the pitman arm, loosen the gear box to frame rail and undo the rag joint. Maybe others will chime in?

Do all that- then there is a snap ring and a metal washer, then the seal is exposed, pop a hole with a sharp punch in the metal part of the seal and thread in a drywall screw and pop it out. Ther are 2 seals- install in reverse order..

do not disasemble/ unthread the nose of the gearbox- trust me

The front 3 1/2" semi-round cover? Easy. Remove the big retaining ring. There's a hole in the case for this. Turn the input shaft CCW to make the piston push the cover off. Turn the input back the other way to keep the balls from falling out. Replace the o-ring and put the cover back on (that's the hard part). Put the retaining ring back.

Napa seal kit is part # 7-123. Last one I got was about $45.

Pitman seals are easy to remove/replace without pulling the box. Remove pitman arm. Remove snap ring. Put a bucket under the shaft, start the engine and turn the wheel back and forth until the seals blow out. Put the single lip seal in first, then washer, then double lip seal, then other washer. Put new snap ring on then pitman arm. Re-fill.

Input seal can be done by removing just the steering shaft, lock ring and adjuster plug (thing that needs a spanner). Count the number of turns it takes to come out so you can put it back where it was. It's gonna be messy.

This is the adjuster plug. Don't pull the input shaft out with it or you'll be in a world of grief.

The adjuster plug pushes against the spool assembly and the worm. If the worm comes out so do your balls.

If I have to take the plug out then there is nothing to stop the balls? And where is the seal in all that?

The balls and worm will stay put as long as you don't turn the input spud or tug on it. There is a o-ring that goes around the base of the threads to seal it there and a couple seals where the input goes through.

Here is the input and spool assembly. You don't want to see this come out.

I've done it without removing the box. I bet you could too.
