I was looking at my frame and steering box in preparation for installing a 4x4x2 box and saw some craziness on the inside of the frame. Looks like it was modified at some point. I can’t tell if the original frame is there and this is an added reinforcement plate or this plate replaced where the frame was cut out at some point? Anyone have any thoughts? What is this are supposed to look like?

Thanks,
Blake

Looks pretty stock original to me from here. Maybe someone else with better eyes or a better screen can see some more details, but it looks normal.

Other than the fact that the bolts appear farther forward than normal, or the crossmember looks a little more to the rear than most, pretty normal quality and design for our Broncos. Not sure about the one reversed bolt, but that could be normal normal too.
I just don’t remember that detail.

When I first looked I only saw one image. I guess it took a while for them to load on my phone.
A lot of us have to deal with the nuts and bolts that are right up against the crossmember. Yours have a lot of room.
What year is your Bronco?

74. From how you are talking I may be lucky enough to have room to just drill new holes for 4x4x2 box.

Depending on what you're gonna do with the bronco and tire size you still may want to reinforce the frame.

I always put a large gusset in that area. By large I mean a 6'' triangle.

you really want to knock out the factory inner tube bolt braces and add new ones in the proper place so you mounting bolts dont crush the frame.
