sterring colum

Are you missing the clamp on the lower end, where it bolts to the rag joint, if I'm understanding the problem right.

no that's not it, i think i remember some on saying that there is a snap ring or something to hold it down. what it doing is pulling the shaft up out of the shifting coller

yes shaft is pulling up it's a 74 auto. you have to hold it down to shift into any gear

Do you have the upper column spring, that should put force on the clamp at the bottom end, if that clamp isnt up against the lower bearing the shaft will move. I know every other steering column I've pulled appart had a snap ring, but I guess that was pre Bronco. Of course my memory isnt what it used to be..
