I got curious and cleaned the frame off to find my vin number and it matches my title exactly except on the frame it begins with F13 and not U13 like on my title. It is definately a stamped F. Has anyone else noticed any odd numbers on their vin number?

On the 74 frame I dragged home yesterday the last digit is a 5 and it looks like some drunk assembly line guy stamped it by carving it with a pocket knife....all crooked and funky. The rest matches so its all good but weird.

That is weird! All the numbers I saw on mine were stamped clearly and straight. (after the rust removal:() It was interesting using a mirror and flashlight to see mine and write it down and then use a mirror again to decode my writing. It felt like a grade school science project.
Josh was the number that looked scratched in an actual part of the last six digets or added at the end?

Most of mine have had a star at the beginning of the VIN and at the end, this one was like up and to the left of the last digit. It was part of the last 6 digits but not in the right place or look right. I think someone forgot one and decided to add it afterwards.

Were they actually done by hand in the factory? I just assumed the stamps were all done by machinery. I had the stars at both ends of my vin too.

That is strange. Where was this stamped on the frame. I've checked the VIN numbers on both of my '66 Bronco and each one was correct, framed in '*'.

I did a body-off on a '70 U15 wagon a number of years ago . The frame was stamped U14 ... the VIN tag & registration was U15 . All the other numbers matched . Brain fart ? ? :p

Well here is the proof. It was hard to get a pic to turn out with the flash on and close up. Tell me what you all think. It's weird!

You havent seen the rest of the frame!;D No, I'm lucky after all the years and abuse, the rust on this one has been pretty minimal. I just made it nice and shiny with a wirebrush.

Very interesting stuff here! I would say that quality control was not enforced back then. Any others out there? tim

Yah quality does seem to be lacking. I'd still like to see Josh's vin with the scratched in number on his frame.
I'd like to have Marti works make me a new tag for my kick panel to replace my missing one but I don't know if I should go with the F or U? LOL

Oh, I'd have an overwhelming urge to use both.... F/U14******, Instant classic!!

Cant help, but one of mine has a missprint too. Frame is a U15, body a U14.. I suspect the frames were built ahead of time and bodys were decided on the fly as ordered..

You have to realize EB's came down the same assembly line as F series trucks. There has to have been some human error in the numbering from time to time. Once a mistake was made it's not likely to be fixed because of the speed of the line.

Tim,

You got to know the "quality control" guys were drunk too. The letter "U" and "F" or a "2" and "3" look exactly a like when you had a couple adult beverages at lunch.
