Stuck Bendix Gear

Several days back we had a discussion about the starter bendix gear sticking when the engine doesn’t start. Thought I’d post a pic or two of an airplane engine in that scenario. I was checking the starter current draw in this airplane by cranking without starting (mixture in idle cutoff, throttle closed). Bendix did not retract.

Oh, if you’re interested, this is a Cessna T182T with turbocharged 540 cubic inch horizontally opposed 6 cylinder that produces 235 horsepower at 2400 rpm.

Would it fit (the engine ) in an EB? Is it an air cooled engine? Certainly would get a lot of attention.

I imagine you could squeeze it in there. You can pick up an overhauled one for around $75k, with exchange. Two magnetos, air/oil cooled. ;)

At $75K, does that include the plane or is that JUST the engine? I can hear my wife saying, “You want to do WHAT? And it costs HOW much?” Lol
