subwoofer ideas

Want to add a sub. Was thinking of the self powered ones or build my own box. I want it out of the way. Was planning on mojnting a slim 10" in the rear side but doesn't look like a box could fit there. So my idea now is to make a downfiring box for an 8 or a 10 if it will fit under the passenger seat. I was thinkin of mounting the front of the seat right to the box. Anyone do this or think its a good idea or have any other good ideas?

I know this is a VERY FAR S T R E T C H, but here is my thoughts and it maybe very dumb. I will not be running an auxiliary gas tank so there is a lot of space under the drivers seat. For granted there is some fab work to be done but there is potential for a clean install there. If not for a subwoofer, gotta be for some sort of storage.

Yea. That's pretty dumb. ;D JK. I think it would be a great spot for storage.. Ive been thinking of design idea for that spot for a while now. Not sure about the woofer though. That spot gets a ton of water and dirt thrown at it. But I guess if you sealed it REALLY well it might work.

Yeah, not the smartest idea I came up with. There would be challenges such the tubs cross members to work around, possible loss of strength under the main seat, etc.

I'm thinking a lockable, sealed, slide out drawer built in to that rectangle of metal is a great idea. Sealing top like an ammo can, use the whole side with the Ford emblem and all as the drawer face = Great hidden storage.

A single JL 10 or 12 inch sub under a console firing down.
It's out of the way. You can really feel the base without turning it up really loud because you're leaning on it.
It would be tough to hurt it unless you flooded your eb.
My buddy Rob had this set up in his '78 for nearly twenty years.
Killer and not too boomy.

So why not the 8" under the passenger seat? I would just cut the front mounts off and mount the front of the seat to the box. Im shocked no one has done this yet.

A shallow mount 8 wouldnt give much bass. I have 2 of those in a 10 in my f250 and its not all that big but just enough.

The difference in sound between an 8 and 10 is huge. Like porn 8" you are in the movie 10" you are the STAR!

A 10" usually requires around 2.5 cu ft of volume and about 7" deep.

He's right. To create real bass (i.e., low frequencies), you need to move large quantities of air. The speaker's cone area and travel distance are what factors into the amount of air you move.

In the most basic terms, little speakers equal little/no bass and larger ones equal more. An 8" woofer is really best suited for mid-bass in a component system, in my opinion. As recommended a 10" or 12" would probably suit your needs best, assuming you have the space for them.

I just measured and I can easily fir a 10 width wise but at most all I would have is 7" depth. So I guess I could use a shallow mounted 10"

I'm running a shallow mount 13.5 JL Audio sub firing down under a dodge colt vista rear seat with a custom steel frame that houses a custom built box. The box has just over a foot of cubic airspace but the minimum requirement is only .08 AS LONG AS YOU HAVE ENOUGH POWER. In order for it to sound good with that little airspace I'm pushing 700 watts to it via a D class amp. More airspace would require less power. I called JL and they walked me through all the needed specs. They were a huge help designing it and theyre products are fantastic. My system will be completely hidden but should sound really good (fingers crossed). There is enough room in the quarters if you don't mind the sub being exposed (I wanted mine hidden).

Here's a link to a slim box (go to post #53 and #59).

Yea I think m going to have to change my location. I just dont think I will be able to make a downfiring box large enough under the front seat. Ill look into under the rear seat now.

When comparing size of the speakers in a single configuration bass production you would be correct, the best sounding competition car I ever heard ran 8-8's so 8" speakers can make awesome bass
