First you need to describe exactly what "broken" means. No way duct tape could be used to fix a push rod broken in two. JB Weld wouldn't do it either. It must have had the duct tape on it as label or something and it broke later. Any others have duct tape on them? Like Viper said, I'd like to see a pic of this.

Since the begining of January. The oil pump just went out and I need to replace the sheered cam and distributor.

Sounds like you need to start with a fresh mill. The oil pump didn't go out, it stopped pumping b/c the gear on the distributor got eaten up by the cam. The distributor, spun by the cam, drives the oil pump. At least I assume the oil pump didn't go out.

I'm probably just being ignorant; I saw it late last night and was like WTF

If you read the post I quoted, it was from the OP saying that he assumed the shop had charged for pulling the head off. I never said anything about the logic, just speaking to the labor/parts vs the cost.

oops missed that part:-[

I can not turn the oil pump at all, with a socket. Isn't it locked up then? I thought that is why the distributor gear broke and then broke the cam gear.

Is this the shop owner?

Got to love this goes with my quote. Take the bottom cover off the oil pump this will tell you for sure what kind of damage there is in there but it sounds like you need a new short block. The distributors gear could have sheared due to the pump seizing had this happen in my Heep but the cam gear thats some sirius damage please post pic's.

The engine is very clean. It must have been rebuilt sometime shortly before I bought the truck last August. I'm going to tear everything apart and check clearances to make sure. All I can really see now is that it has Comp Cams aftermarket rocker arms. Can't wait for more surprises!!

If you can't duct it...fuck it
Or
Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side and a dark side and it holds the universe together

This thread must be a joke. A pushrod cant be held together with duct tape and JB Weld would plug the tube so no oil flows, plus would still break!

I had a pushrod bend in an old Ford Industrial 331 in a New Holland StackCruiser. I couldn't get it to bend back right, so I welded a piece of rod in instead. It's a FE so the oiling doesn't come through the pushrods. It worked fine all week (hay season). I just made sure not to rev it too high. I got a spare set of pushrods out of a junked u-haul engine in the dump. It seems the dead gas from sitting all winter makes the valves stick and bends pushrods.

Yeah its not broken, but the parallax got to me last night I guess. This one didn't roll very straight on the table. I'm a contributor now; here are some picks anyways. I'm gonna pull the pan and oil pump now to see why it seized. I think the engine looks pretty clean otherwise.

Does all the pushrods have that wear pattern? The comp cam roller rockers I have seen require chromally pushrods and guide plates. Your might be differant but you might check.

They all look the same; not sure what type of comp cam roller rockers they are yet; the block is a 72.

So it's just a ring of something wrapped around the rod, right? It doesn't really look like tape in the pics.

Sorry those cell phone pics don't really show enough detail once I scaled them down; yes it is some kind of tape.

I didn't find anything in the oil pump; now I'm stumped :(

Have you called the shop to apologize yet????

Apologize for what? I didn't accuse them of anything when I called; just asked which one they replaced. For all I know, they could have put that tape on that one. Considering the amount of money I paid them, they should have caught this on a visual inspection. I won't be going back there, ever.

Now I will apologize to this forum for jumping to conclusions a little bit too early. I'm sorry!
