First off, THANK-YOU ALL!!! ;D You guys have been a great help in preparing for my engine rebuild. It seems the more I learn, the more questions I have. The latest has to do with cams. How much lift is too much? The kit I am looking at comes with a .472 lift, 260/280 duration. I don't want it to run too rough, just a bit more perf. Is this a pretty calm cam or too radical? I'm sure I don't have to tell you that I am new to all this, but you guys have been really great. Thanks so much! ;D ;D

Which engine? Generally, a cam with under .500 lift and maybe 300 (?) duration is pretty user-friendly. My 351C has .510/.536 lift (can't remember the duration), and my 429 has .509 lift, 300 duration (solid lifters), and neither really lope too badly. My Bronco's 302 has .448/.472, 270/280 duration and is smooth as glass at an idle. With Fords I understand it is usually important to get a split duration cam, especially with stock heads. I would say the cam you are asking about shoud be good and smooth; it won't sound anything like a John Deere. ;D

thanks. It is a 302, and it may be identical to your cam, I don't have the #'s in front of me, but yours sounds awful familiar.

I had almost that exact same cam in my 302. Great cam, pulled hard through about 4500 and then it was done. I rarely ever got it that high though. Idle was smooth as could be. You could even go a little more radical if you want a lopey idle. If no, I would go with one in the area that you are looking.

Have basically the same cam as descibed above on a 30 over 302 with Edelbrock intake and carb. Cam sheet on my Melling MK1 looks like this:

Lift @ .50
.204 intake
.214 exhaust
Duration
.280 Intake
.290 Exhaust
Gross Cam Lift
.448 Intake
.472 Exhuast
Center Line
107 Intake
117 Exhaust

Very happy with overall perfromance and drivability characteristics.
