But whackadoodle sounds so friendly! Good to use between friends.
Right there a couple of notches above knuckleheads. 😁

You may be right about “whackadoodle” sounding friendlier; however, I’ve found that there’s an entire generation coming up that take umbrage at being called whackadoodle or knucklehead and need their “safe space” to regrouped. When called a mental defective they think it’s a complement. 🤪🤪
I reserve whackadoodle for talking about my sister or an EB friend’s wife.

Gotcha. Been getting a little out of touch lately, with anyone but my fellow Bronco whackadoodles and knuckleheads I guess! :D ;)
Decided I'd better use a smiley face and winking emoji to make sure nobody takes offense. Assuming they notice those for what they are intended!

Gotta' go now. At least temporarily while I listen to Blind Faith. The next song is 15 minutes long, and I don't want to ramble on... Ooh, a Led Zeppelin pun!
Next in the que is Blink 182, so I think I've got things pretty well covered for now.

There was a like photo posted here a few years ago. I upgraded to a collapsible shaft when I did the power steering.

I always assumed the expanded metal lower sections had the ability to bend and distort out of the direction of impact so the steering column would not shove into the cab. Is there enough travel in a telescopic sleeve to avoid this issue? Seems like it would just get stronger the deeper it collapsed.

Any shaft that does not come out of the strg box absolutely straight & in line with the steg shaft & column is usually safe "r" but depending on how the frame bends & pushes the boxes would determine whether you're skewered or not. :(

I error on safety & misalignment

Wow, this is now on the top of my list. I have a solid, splined steel piece with borgeson steel u joints. I'll bet I'd have a bad time in a front end collision like that

I'm just gonna put this out there... Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates' character) in Misery used the term "Whackadoodie" in one scene. Or was it "Cockadoodie"? Damn, now I gotta watch it again. My wife will probably be thrilled...

Anything is better than nothing. Can't plan for every what if but it makes a difference in a potential crash. In the pics above how much of a difference would it have made to push in 6" less? what you can't plan for is the angle change, if the angle increases because it can compress then does it push the column down or up instead of in? More than likely yes, which is better for you by a LOT.

I’m redoing a 77 now, does it need a collapsible steering shaft? Suggestions on which one?
TIA

76 & 77 came from the factory with collapsible shafts.

All of the vendors sell a lower collapsible shaft that will work. If you need upper and lower and are using the 77 column, the upper shaft is shorter than the 73-75 upper shaft.

Good to hear that ‘77 Bronco was built standard with collapsible steering shafts. One less part to buy.
