Tire size - stock setup

I've read the FAQs and searched the forums and can't find an answer to this question...

I am looking to get new tires for my 72 Sport. Its all bone stock. Factory original tire size is 235/75R15, if my research is correct. How large a tire can I run on a stock setup without running into any clearance issues? TIA,

Tim

I wouldn't go any larger than 30 x 9:50 with stock lift and uncut, you might get by running 31's but most likely they will rub even with slight flex.

Buy a measuring tape and measure.

31's will fit. Barely. If you flex it out, you will rub the middle of the rear fenders (which look hideous in stock form anyway), and the front corners of the front fenders.

I thought you were turning over a new leaf because some of your posts in recent past weren't so rude and actually added to the thread. This one appears you are slipping back.

Anyway I am sure the info is here, you just need the right key words. Search for "Largest tires Stock Bronco" or use biggest and uncut as alternate words.

Here is one for instance:

Nope. There was no new leaf turned over. There are so many variations on stock Broncos that the only real way to determine what tire will fit is to measure.

Thanks to everyone for all the replys, even 76Broncofromhell and his brutal honesty ;) . It looks like I'll need to stick with around 30 x 9.5, and work on my search skills a bit.;D

Yes, you are correct, but there are more polite and diplomatic ways to say things like that. Always belittling folks makes for a sad and unhappy life. But to each his own...

I'm glad you asked that question and drew the wrath of the omnipotent all knowing gurus. I was going to ask the same question. My question is "measure what?" It's not a simple measurment. I depends on the condition of the springs, wheel back spacing, knowing what the path the wheel flange takes as the suspension flexes, etc. I'm going to have the local tire shop mount up some used tires to try out on the rear. He's doing it for free since I've been a customer for years. I was also unsucesful getting any hits with my search requests.

Thanks, Dave...

Thank you for the life lesson. I will bring that to the campfire next time I put the beer and steak away to get out the herbal tea and tofu dogs.

In truth, the "what size tire will fit questions" are always a bit murky. The only true way to determine your correct size is to measure or go down and fit tires. I don't see it as rude...more of a common sense "nudge".

Perhaps you should change your avitar to a bottle of soy milk also! ;D

I have a 74 Sport with stock coils, leaf springs, and upgraded JD shocks. My BFG AT 30x9.50s fit absolutely fine on stock rims, even with sagging springs. Hope this helps.

Take care,
Ed
