Is there any kind of bezel surrounding the toggle Steve? A stock one will have a chrome bezel (like all the other control knobs) that will say "Main" and "AUX" to show you which position.
If it doesn't have that, maybe it was installed by a PO for another purpose?
Does it go side-to-side, or up-and-down?

I have 2 toggle switches on the left in my 70. Top one is for the aux/main fuel tank registry for the fuel gauge.
The lower switch the PO had hooked up to a rear aux light, which I have since hooked up to my electric fuel pump, which is also pulling power from key on only, so Idon't need to flip the switch every time I start/stop the vehicle, but only in a trouble situation.
Switches are located between the manual choke pull.

I have throttle cable and manual choke knobs in those positions, above the fuel-toggle, on mine.
