Well, the base/clear was not to be, not today anyhow. I did a couple more coats of high build and then brushed a bit of high build in a few minor low spots. Thought I'd do some wet sanding to eliminate some scratches, and - low and behold - water is wet! And shiney! And reflective! Found a couple of spots that were not bad, but not good either. Decided to put off the base/clear until a I had the potholes filled.

Thanks Ken, I appreciate the input. Tough to top blue sky and puffy clouds, 'specially in beautiful West Michigan. Finally got to spray the base/clear today. Here's how it looked on the inside. Inside of the barn, that is Maybe lungs also, but I've already lived a fun and full life, so.......

And here's the way it looked on the outside. And the underside.

Now , before any of y'all go all goggley-google eyed on me, I've got some sins to confess. Remember when I said, "Don't have time to do it right, but plenty of time to do it over"? Well, I ain't gonna do it over 'cuz it's a truck, not a church. But there is a fly (actually a few flies) in the ointment. And, although it felt smooth as a baby's butt, I didn't notice the crack until later. And a question for the poobahs and wizards - Should I have primed over the bondoed touch-up spot before spraying the base? Inquireing minds in beautiful West Michigan want to know.

Well, 2 steps forward and 3 steps back...... Went to the paint supplier today with some q's. Turns out the bondo spot should have been primed, there was moisture in the compressor air and the baby's butt crack should be filled. As I've said, it's not a church, but if you're in for a dime, you're in for a dollar. Bought an air drier gizmo and more paint to replace the paint I had sanded off the top and onto the driveway. And I bondo-ed the butt crack. And got the air aqua-lung set up. Tomorrow is another day. Thank goodness.

The air drier is shown up-side down (turvied?!) and the wood shaft will be set into the boat stand.

Thanks Om, but I'm not so much patient. When Ray at the paint shop said, "If it were mine, I'd do it over," I knew he was right. One small-ish boo-boo and that would be the only thing I'd see all the time. Spent today with some wet-sanding, a tiny bit-o-bondo and the new aqua lung water sucker device. Sprayed a seal coat of epoxy. All set for base/clear again.

You are a patient man.... Definitely appreciate you sharing the process and the results!
And here's the 'do-over'. Substantially better. Still needs some 1200 wetsand.

Glad I did the re-do. I'm always a day late and a dollar short anyway.

Well, with the top painted, it was time to head to the bar. Roll bar, that is. What the safari top will sit on.

I had changed the leg lenghths of the cage a while back to better accomodate a full hard top. Wasn't positive that I got the numbers right.

I guess you won't know if the hat fits if you don't put it where it belongs. Gingerly, of course, wet paint.... What color you ask? Ginger Ale, a Ford color.

Yeah, I guess that'll do, all things considered. Need to shorten the center cage legs 0.619 on each side, using the SWAG method. Gonna wait a while to fabricate a fastening method, probably some type of pipe split in half.

Pipe split in half with a worm gear hose clamp. Will work like a champ, simple and strong. This example is way over kill for a headset and/or helmet hook, but if this had a split piece of tube you could probably pick the truck up by the hook. Can’t take credit for the idea, stole it from a rail dragster that I wrenched on for a bit for the motor mounts, held in a 3000hp blown V8 with 4 worm gear hose clamps.

Thanks Yeller, that's the direction I might take. I sure appreciate the expertise and experience that you share here, thanks!

Yeah, its a much smaller version of the Canadian Vancouver, across the Columbia River from Portland... still have my condo in Gold Beach, OR on the Rogue River.

Aw, $h!t! Take a peek back at the pics in post #70. For me, they were plenty good for 50' at 50 mph. Just needed a bit 'o' wet sanding. I took some 1200 to it today and followed up with a scotch brite grey ultra-fine pad. For some reason, NO SHINE WHATSOEVER!! Just as cloudy and fogged up as Joe seems. (Btw, Joe is my neighbor, not that other guy.) 8&^%)&#&^#@ and then some more... I wonder if the Scotch pad ultra fine was too coarse for the clearcoat. Btw, did I tell you that I happened on a 1/2 gallon of Valspar base Ginger Ale and a 1/2 gallon of clear, plus I bought the same amounts and color in Matrix brand. Guess I'll be sanding and painting again much sooner than I wish. Hope three times a charm.
