Hey Howard, did you hit it with a buffer/polisher when you finished with the scotch brite pad?
Great question Ken. Short answer, no, I did not. I was bummed and walked over to my neighbor, Mark, a big truck driver who works in the shop and paints some times in the winter. I told him the sad tale, and we talked it over. I ended up vigorously hand buffing a small area. Some improvement, but not enough. Took some 600# to annother area and a bit more improvement, still not enough. This morning I went to church first and then wet-sanded the whole top with 600# first, then 800#. Tack rag, 2 1/2 coats of base, 2 1/2 coats of clear and it looks Great! Well, pretty darn good anyway. Now the tough call is tomorrow - wet-sand or let it be? I know where I think I'll head.

Well, a leap of faith here. The base/clear I sprayed yesterday turned out to the best yet, perhaps the church visit helped. Looked really good with some orange peel, nothing excessive. BUT, with what Ken and other Poobahs have been saying, even better could be just a wet-sand and a buuf away. So I bit the bullet and wet-sanded the not-bad-at-all finish with 1200# then1600# then 2000# and then 2500#. Gonna buff with some compound and a blue sponge buffer wheel tomorrow. Fingers crossed....

Here's where it was after wet-sanding yesterday.

Here's where it is now, after buffing a bit......

I think I'll keep buffing, inch by inch, step by step.....

Niagara Falls!
Slowly I turned…
Spot on, Paul, spot on! It could be true that experience is the best teacher, but it sure as heck ain't the cheapest. Painted that bugger three times before it got the nod, and even then, had to take corrective measures. The blue pad was not aggressive enough. Picked up a yellow one and crossed the 'finish' line.

Gonna close this chapter now. Leaving on a short vacation Thursday. Not going to figure out the mounting until the cage is installed. Gotta admit that had some fun figuring out how much I didn't know!

Thank you Ken, your gentle nudge was what turned the tide! Should have said 'turvyed' the tid.e.

Howard... that looks great! Just remember, our journey on this earth is short. That beautiful top will go to one of your loved ones some day. ;)

Sound advice, Mark. I like to think I'm hurrying as fast as I can, but I do stop to smell a lot od roses. I appreciate your message. Now, if I could convince my wife that I should live at the barn full time......
