torque converter for 96 explorer and c4?

Called TCI to get some advice on a new torque converter for a new engine combo? I used a TCi Sat night spec on a higher HP setup a few years back so I called them for advice.

The tech guy said they don't make TC for 4x4 anymore? When I questioned him and explained I didn't understand what a trafercase had to do with the TC, he insisted they no longer make anything for 4wds?

Anyone have advice for a TC for a stock 1996 explorer 5.0, c4, 3.54 gears and 33" tires and who is makes TC for 4x4s?

Thanks
John

I have the exact same setup as you except mine is a 2000 explorer. Without the factory 4R70W tranny mated to the engine the PCM will be set at the P and N idle RPM, which ~725, with the stock C4 convertor this will cause it to wanna creep when sitting at a stop in gear, trust me I have been through this. I first had Gary, "EFIGUY" lower the idle rpm to the "in gear RPM setting which was bout 635", but then it didn't always start right off. I had him set it back to the P,N idle rpm, which it starts the way it should, but it wanted to creep. I installed a higher stall convertor and it fixed the problem. Here is the one I went with.

What's the stall on that converter surfer-b?

not surfer-B but summit says 1700, but of course ymmv depending on application.

I've put in an 1800rpm spec TC behind an eec iv EFI 5.0 with a c4, 4.11s and 35s and it ran great.

Funny...that was the exact one I was asking the TCI guy about? Not sure why he didn't think it would work on a 4x4?

Thanks

I have a stock speced converter (1650-1750). This is behind a 5.0 Explorer eecV , C4. I haven't had any issues that surfer-b mentioned. The ECM is locked on "P/N", that's how EFIguy set mine up as well. Runs fantastic!

I had a stock C4 and now I have a stock 4R70W behind a roller 5.0 with the stock Explorer cam. The stock Bronco converter is really tight that is why it creeps. It may flash / stall higher under load but the no load grab was really low rpm it loaded the engine down. When I switched to the stock Explorer converter it was loose enough I needed to go back into my tune. I would not use the stock Bronco converter on a Explorer engine definitely go with something with more stall and a lighter no load hold.
