Trac device for 28 spline advise

Hello all so I've been reading a lot of threads on traction devices and I apologize in advance for my ignorance. From what I've read all original for 9's are 28 spline right ??? Referring to the Axel I believe. Now to the trac device from what I can tell Detroit seems to be a favorite for over all simplicity and traction. But is not made for a 28 spline right or wrong ?? I want something comparable to Detroit with as much simplicity and strength any suggestions would be great not selectable just install and forget . thanks for any response. P.S. it also seems a good idea to have this set up by a knowledgeable gear mechanic ???

Detroit comes in 28 or 31 spline and they make a soft locker version. There was a 28 spline detroit for sale on here with axle shafts. Not sure if its still available or not.

I've read on here that some serious off road users have broken the Detroit's. I would have bought the used one on here but the wife wouldn't let me. I just dropped a lot of dough on a new set of bmx wheels for my race bike. lol

There are plenty of videos on how to set up the 9 inch. Give those a watch first and decide if its something you can do or not.

If you are going to stay with 28 spline axles I would skip the Detroit and get a truetrac instead. Less chance of axle breakage and better on the street.

First find out if you have a big bearing or small bearing nine rear that will let you know on what axels you can go with 28, 31 or 35 spline then it's a choice of how much money you want to spend. Yukon locker have one of the better warranties out on the market right know but if money not a problem go ARB locker.

truetrac...Detroit if you have lots of extra 28 spline axles laying around since you will be replacing them!

If you are a hardcore enough rock crawler* that a TrueTrac isn't all you will need, then you also will be replacing the 28 spline axles with 35 spline.

*usually gets two wheels in the air on opposite corners

31 spline upgrade is common enough it is often overlooked. It is just something that is assumed will be done when a decent differential/limited slip/locker is installed. Yes, they were all built with 28 spline axles. 31spline has been an upgrade for so long that some people think it was an option or became standard at some point (well it did become standard in the Bronco, for the '78 model year).

I will say the 28 spline is stronger than a dana 30. So it isn't the weakest axle ever to have been put under a Bronco. But there are reasons people have done upgrades. Not saying you have to get rid of the 28 spline, they have lasted a very long time. Just saying it isn't the wisest to invest much into the 28 spline. If you plan to sink hard earned cash into the rear axle, some of it is best spent on 31 spline axles.

Well, just because a "Detroit seems to be a favorite for over all simplicity and traction" doesn't make it right for your application. Selecting a traction device that works best for you is the first step. Your next would be the axles. If your need for a traction device isn't that demanding, then you might just end up using your 28 spline axles.
How do you plan to use the car?

I would say it is only about 30 percent off road not a rock crawler I just want to be able to climb some modest trails nothing extreme . so would that be tru track ( who makes that ?) And then I can stay with original Axel ? I guess I have to determine small or large bearing ?
