Here's my problem:
I have a '74 with 3-speed manual trans.

While driving, my J-shifter wants to pop out of 2H and into neutral. I took it to a local trans. shop and they said it wasn't exterior (linkage) related.....it was internal. They said that they could take it down and check, but the labor would be around $300. Wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy a rebuilt one from Jeff's and simply replace it?

What's the procedure?

If I do replace the TC, can anyone give me some
removal/install instructions? All advice will be greatly appreciated.

Did you check to see if the return spring is OK? The spring looks like a long throttle return spring that hooks into the hole on the bottom of the trans. case shifter. You'll see the hole on the shifter from underneath but will probably have to pull the rubber around the shifter to see the top of the transfer case to check the other end of the spring. Easy things first before the checkbook comes out.

The only problem with removal of just the t case is the needle bearings that ride on the input shaft they will fall out upon seperation from the intermedate houseing. If I was to do it I would support the tranny and take the intermedeate houseing on back off with the t case attached. It should just slide of the tranny. I rebuilt mine myself a few years back probally the first hard thing i have ever done to a car and it was pretty simple. I think all the bearings and seals were less then 150 including new bearing and seal for the intermedate houseing. Just get a good scematic(sp?) of the t case and go from there. only took me half a day to do mine thats with washing everything down in a parts cleaner. And no instructions just the scematic. You won't need any bearing pullers or presses everything just slips together. the toughest thing i remeber was the needle bearings for the input shaft wouldn't all go in. The solution was to drop the last one in strait from the top. That took about a half hour to figure out. coat them with grease also so they stick together and hopefully won't fall out till you get the intermedate housing bolted back on. And as for shifter if you have it out its the perfect time to fab yourself up a twinstick. :)
