yesterday afternoon i had my transfer in neutral and i accidentally shifted my automatic transmission into Reverse and the transfer started grinding loud.. (i know...stupid mistake)
so now i try to put it in 2hi and it keeps griding but doesnt go all they way.... i can put it in 4hi and 4low with some grinding..

easy fix, or reaaaally bad fix?

It's normal. Turn the engine off. Put the tcase in gear. The trans output shaft will turn any time the load is removed from the trans output, causing grinding. Having the tcase in gear and tires on the ground is a load. PARK is the only position the output shaft won't turn with the engine running. Don't try to shift into PARK if the tcase is in neutral or you could break the park pawl, hence turning the engine off.

Shouldn't have broken anything just putting the trans in gear with the TC in neutral. Is this a J or T Shift TC?

its a 73 bronco....i think its got the J shift...

the tranny is working fine....its just the transfer case wont go into 2hi, not even with the engine off or on, in neutral or parked...

One of the problems with the J-shift is the pivot gets loose, and then the lever doesn't do what it is supposed to. You replace the single shift lever with 2(Twin) levers, one for the front axle shift rail, and one for the rear axle shift rail. This gives you better control of them, and also allows you to shift into Front wheel only hi/low and rear wheel only hi/low.

If you can get 4 hi and 4 low but not 2 hi I would guess that the shifter is not moving properly, the internal movement to get to 2 Hi is being done with those other shifts, the biggest difference is the shifter has to move laterally to disengage from the front axle shift rail and only move the rear axle shift rail.
