Tubing Front Clip - Steering gear clearance??

So I'm in the process of tubing my front clip and have run into a small clearance issue...

1. There is a tab on the top of the steering gear that seems COMPLETELY unescessary... can someone she some light on that? and if I could possibly grind that sucker off?

2. Those that did tube your front clip, how did you deal with the steering gear being the way :)? Did you just cut a notch in your front hoop for it? or just make the front hoop above or in front of the steering gear?

I would post pics but I'm not right in front of my Bronco right now... any help would be appreciated!!

Here's how mine attaches to the body mount perch and clears the PS gear.

By the way, laugh all you want at my crappy welds! They're NOT representative of what comes out of the WCB shop, just my own personal garage (we employ real fabricators at the shop, not hacks like me) LOL...;D

Tough to say what the tab is without seeing it, but tabs are often added to castings to make it easier to hold the part in a fixture during manufacturing. If that's what it is there's no reason you couldn't grind it off now.

heh... well this rig is probably gonna see more pavement than rocks, so I'm probably gonna stick with hydroboost and a steering box :)

Great link SACHEM! Do you still run your setup without inner fenders? I was thinking I would fab something (sheet metal, etc) to clean up the look of the engine bay, while keeping some of the junk out... It sounds like they aren't necessary... but I think I'm gonna do it...

Can't really say I've run it. I've been redoing the thing for the last year and a half since I bought it. I plan to mount everything in ammo cans to keep the junk out. Garner, the guy who fabbed this said he never had a problem but i don't think I'll chance it.

this is where I am now as far as the buildup goes. I got married and bought a house. Those 2 things really dried up the funds.

Trust me I know the feeling... except for the married part :) I'm pushing to get my rig button'd up before I go and do something like that!
