You can get a new one for around a grand. I picked up mine used from a salvage yard, came from a 2003 Jeep Liberty with around 48,000 miles. Paid around $400-500 a few years back.

I've found that around here a rebuilt one is in the $900 range, one that needs to be rebuilt in the $450 range and one that you roll the dice on is in the $6-700 range.

I just sold one that was supposed to have 60,000 miles on it for $700. If you look on car-part.com they range from $500 - $1,200 and most of the yards charge a core on top of that.

I've bought two for less then $200. Both needed rebuild. Don't plan on finding a used one in perfect condition. If asking over $250 for an "as is" or rebuildable core, you're getting screwed.

And I just bought one for $700 ;D;) because there just weren't any around here yet. Been looking for awhile, and I pretty much agree with what was said. I had been looking to pay about $200 to $300 for one I could rebuild myself (so I knew what I was getting), but couldn't find them. Rebuilt ones all day long for $800 to $1000 (some with shipping, some not) and no core charges, some new for $1500 to $2000 but I wasn't going that route. No Jeeps in the boneyards around here recently, and nobody selling them on Craigslist except for between $700 and $900.
Found a nice low-mileage one for a fair price in Phoenix last year (for a couple of hundred), but I'd have had to go and pull it out of the guy's Jeep in his brother's garage while the owner was working up in the mid-west. Just not quite convenient enough for me to work it out.

So it seems pretty much the usual "supply and demand" system at work. Wherever you can find a few, or you can pull your own from a wreck, they're in the $300 range. Anywhere they're hard to find, they're in the $700 range.
I'd jump on that $350 one (but with it's issues, make a "better offer") unless you think something's fishy.

As far as I know, the only two vehicles that ever came with them (with the correct input shaft style anyway) are the Liberty and the TJ Jeeps. In the TJ/LJ (Unlimited) from something like 2000 to 2005 or so.
So not a long run, nor a lot of donors languishing in junkyards. Luckily they sold a lot of Jeeps around then. It's just finding one that's being parted out before the re-sellers get their hands on them that's the problem.

yeah... my understanding is 00-04 liberty's and wranglers.
Supposedly some dakota's and rams, but haven't researched that.

Also heard/read that early '00 tranny's had a problem with 1st gear.

I was lucky enough to find the online tech manual for this transmission and what I also just noticed is that they have a 2wd and 4wd version. Not really sure what the difference is between the two... Hopefully I picked up the correct one needed... I'll have to read the manual closer.

Picked my NV3550 up for $200 found on craigslist from a local mech shop that replaced a tranny for a client and was looking to get their core $ back. Supposed to only have a noisy whine in a couple gears, but the plan is to crack it open and replace what's needed anyways.

You can try jeep911.com down here in San Diego, I know they had a few awhile back.

The Dakota is likely the wrong spline count and/or diameter of the input shaft, but not 100% sure about that fact. The $200 versions are the ones I've been hoping for, since no matter what the (stated) mileage was, I would feel better if I went to the trouble and expense of rebuilding it.

Glad you found yours that way.
