Using Por-15. what kind of Clearcoat?

i want to cover my frame with Por-15. they say you need to clear-coat the Por-15 so it doesn't fade in direct sunlight. can i clearcoat it with any kind of clearcoat? or does it have to be the Por-15 clearcoat to get the durability? I don't want to spend more money than i have to

I am using Glidden Devthane 2 part Polyurethane in Gloss Black as a top coat. Great look and cures very hard and scratch resistant.

My frame has held up well without topcoat. The frame isn't in direct sunlight.

I believe they mean "TOP COAT" and not "CLEAR COAT". I am using the POR-15 chassis black. I have used it in the past with great results.

You don't clear coat POR15! You can 'top coat' it, but why? There are two kinds of POR, there's regular, and Chassis coat which is UV stable. I used regular POR and it's chalked out a little bit on the ends of the frame, the rest looks like the day I put it on.

Por15 is killer stuff, but you have to follow the directions to the letter! I would use the top coat for the por15, It comes in black (finish like the por15) and chassis black semi. They work great over the por15, but you have to apply it within a few hours of the por curing The por coat should dry to the point that it just pulls at your finger when u touch it. If it cures you have to scuff it all to make the top coat or any coat stick! and you don't want to do that

and the previous poster is correct, if it's not in direct sunlight, it'll be fine

It gets REALLY chalky. All gloss goes away and it turns a grayish color.

But it still works great. I had a peice of steel next to the garage that I cleaned a brush that had POR-15 on it. 4 years later it was chalky from the sun but it never rusted or chipped with a blow with a hammer.

I've used Rustoleum spray can for a top coat in the past with good results on my rims. I thought when I started I had the POR top coat but it got hard so I used what I had on hand. Let the POR get to where you can almost see your fingerprints in it and spray away.
