Voltage Regulator location, painless harness

Hi,

I am up to the passenger side whip on the Painless harness install and it looks like I need to move the voltage regulator from the firewall to somewhere up front, correct? Any suggestions? It seems a bit crowded up front for that.

Thanks,
Jason

unwrap the harness and reroute the wires to where the regulator is.

The Painless harness that I installed on my '75 put the regulator in the stock position on the firewall.....

The internally regulated would be the "3G" alternators? Seems like that might be the route I am going. Not so easy to move the connection there are some short wires.

anybody know what year car I can get an internally regulated 3G alternator out of that I can run on a vbelt setup? I am looking to ditch the external voltage regulator not get a mondo alternator. It's a stock 302 with new pulleys and power steering.

Thanks,
Jason

Not sure what to put in the search box, but there are several complete lists here on potential donor vehicles. Maybe just type in "3G donor list" or something to that effect.
I think most of them come with serpentine setups, since that was the way of the world by then, but you can easily swap out the serp pulley for your existing v-groove type. The shaft diameters are the same from what I understand.

I remember when Eric was talking about the design for the new harness. we discussed the different locations of the voltage regulator over the years. I thought that feature was built in to the harness. And if the wires are not already loomed and taped (which I think they are not unless you did it yourself) then all you have to do is clip a wire tie or two and pull the appropriate wires back down to the firewall. Leaving all the other ones up front there.

Good luck.

In '73 they had to move it from there because of the new cold-air intake snorkel running along the inner fender wall behind the battery. Over the years, I've seen them on the fender wall, the fender well, and the firewall.

Well I went down to the local Napa parts and got the Ford guy who works the counter and we ended up with Napa alternator 66251 and it dropped right in.

It's a 95amp 3G, internally regulated. So there ends my issues with external voltage regulators.

So the wiring is done, now what? :) I go search for testing threads. More to follow in another thread.

Thanks again for all the help.
