WARN 8274 oil?

I have been re-furbishing my 8274 following this article on Pirate.

The tech article says to use 6 oz. of NON-Detergent 30W oil. I did not open the case since I can inspect the gears from taking the motor and clutch knob off. It does have some oil in it and I have let some leak out by tipping it over while cleaning.

My question is that 6 oz. seems like a very small amount of oil. Would more oil hurt it? Without cracking the case and draining it there is no way for me to tell how much is in it, but I know if I add 6 more ounces I'm safe. I just don't see how 12 oz could hurt it. Am I safe?

It just needs enough for the lower gear to pick it up and smear it between the gears. Too much and it will leak into the drum. Low speed and intermittant use means it doesn't need a constant oil bath. The bushings for the drum won't benefit from the oil, in fact the other side of the drum receives no lube at all. And after reading the rest of your post...Adding another 6 oz probably won't be a problem, but might make a mess. If you have winch rope, it could discolor it if it leaks through the drum onto it.

I had an old Warn winch and I recall it having a "fill line" on the fill plug.
I also updated to modern 90wt gear oil.
Too bad the shaft seal was shot because the oil leaked out. (I did not do a rebuild, just a fresh motor to a tired old winch)

Thanks for the answers! Would a standard 80W or 90W be ok rather than going to find a non-detergent oil? Even thought about throwing some lucas in there so I know it's chasing the gears.

I put 80-90 in mine for a while, and it sure was sluggish when pulling line out by hand. flushed it, and put 30w in there, and it's a little better. on mine, there is a fill plug too

robert, the one we just rebuilt, we added some (maybe 2 oz in the 6 total) of lucas to help in those long periods of no use. it will keep the gears coated.
got my 30W at advance.

I went ahead and cracked the case open tonight to see how much was left in the bottom - not much at all! I'm glad I checked. Now I'll go ahead and drain what's left and go back with all new. I think I'll do like Nick and add a little lucas to some 30W. Thanks for all of the help.

Does anyone have an exploded diagram of how to re-assemble the clutch assembly? The article on Pirate is good, but skips a few steps on the clutch. Any tips or tricks on keeping the ball bearings in place besides grease and patience?
