weight limit on original spare tire carrier

I have a lubr that I plan on lifting 3.5" and put either a 33x10 or a 31x10 tire on it. That said is it bad to keep a spare tire of that size on the original rear tire carrier?

Hi. I ran a 33" spare on my rear carrier for a while. I noticed that the body panels near the carrier mounts was starting to separate. It wasn't bad, but you could tell the difference between the mount side and the other side. I eventually changed the bumper to one that had a mount, so I removed the stock one. I think the biggest problem I had was the rattle the large tire caused with the stock mount. It's really quiet now.

I had a 31-1150-15 tire on mine at one time. Freeways with concrete sections were a problem. That was noisy and was really tearing the body apart. An occasional rough road or bump caused no problems though. Once I had other drivers honking at me when the carrier bounced hard enough to come unlatched and was out at the end of the restraint cable. Since I wanted to carry a spare of the same size, I ended up mounting it in the car.

Not to hijack this thread but I removed the old rusty cable a whi;le a ago (thought it was a security cable with a padlock on the end of it). After reading BluBuckaroo's story, I think I am going to put a new cable on there...

I have a 31x10.50 on there and have not had any issues yet (ofcourse I have not taken it wheeling yet). I saw someone on here modify the stock rear bumper with a short bracket or tire stop that allowed the tire to rest on the bumper and relieve some of the weight of a larger tire on the tire carrier and rear quarter panel. It was a small mod that was not at all noticeable. I would try searching the forum for a thread as he had a photo of it.

I ran with the stock carrier and 32s until I hit a hard bump and that was it. I don't remember what exactly gave way (it was a long time ago) but that was my justification for buying a new bumper.

I guess what I'm saying is your driving style can be a big factor in your decision.

I hung a 35 off of my stock carrier for many years. It would occasonally pop open in Moab when things got twisty but I never had any problems with the body getting torn up. I finally built a new carrier mounted to the bumper and added a couple of gas can mounts. The new one rattles a lot less.

I've had my 35" BFG spare on the back for about three years but I have the intention of building a rear bumper with carrier.

So far no issues with the body where the carrier mounts and I drilled the latch for a pad lock and I've never had it fly open on me.

For many years I had nothing but a stock tire and rim on mine it still pulled the body a little. Currently I have a 33x10.50 hanging on it because the body is already pulled. One day I'll fix the body ad probably go to a bumper mounted rack.

I wish I could find that thread...

find it?

Did you ever find this thread? I have BFG 33's. The bracket has bent and is starting to tear the metal on the tailgate. My welder was talking about a lower bracket to support the wight similar to this thread so I'd love to see what others have done. especially with a pic
