Im checking out a 1999 ford expedition and im trying to deside if it will be enough to pull the bronco. i had a 2001 f150 supercrew with the same drive train and it did ok.

I know that the max a expedition can pull is 8200lbs

my bronco dose not have much body left, but has a full cage,351w-c6-np205
39's with beadlocks. any guesses?

Mine is sitting at 4138lbs. I have 35 boggers and a 351/c4/d20. My cage has probably 30 to 40% the steel that is on yours. I also am sitting on stock axles with stock bumpers and no winch. I hope that helps a little

Mine as a shell (simple 6-point cage and a handful of tools) went across the scales at the drag strip just a sneeze under 4k. Could probably hit that 4k if the tanks were filled.

I figure a trail loaded rig sitting on stock axles with a good cage and bumpers, loaded with spares and gear to be 5k. Maybe a bit less but better to error on the heavy side for calculation purposes. Another 2k for a trailer and you look to be toting around 7k on the hitch.

i'd figure yours around 5k. mine is on 33's, NV3550, 302, with bumpers, winch, and family cage, i'm at 4,465 with the doors on.

I weighed mine a while back and it was right at 4K lbs. I'm running a soft top with inserts, a fiberglass hood, 35 inch spare and winch. With your engine / tranny combo (C6's are heavy!) and 39's with beadlocks, my guess is you are pushing 5K lbs. My local landfill will weigh it for free.

Expedition should pull it fine. towed mine on an all steel car hauler trailer behind my '99 GMC Yukon on many trips with no problems whatsoever. Yukon was equipped with a 5.7L engine and towing package. if Expedition doesn't incl towing package at least add a transmission cooler.

I have an 05 Expedition and it will tow a Bronco OK but make sure your trailer brakes are working good. It will struggle on the hills.

I towed mine to Gore on a rented haul trailer behind my Pathfinder. Thank god there aren't any hills on the trip.

You'll be fine.

i think a tranny cooler will be good for it.
here is the link to it.

i hate the wheels and all the tan. but the mustang cant pull the bronco and it's really starting to show it's age and i want something i can sleep in when i go wheeling or what not.

i figured the bronco was around 5k but wanted to make sure.
so when i switch to 1tons and 44's i may need to upgrade vehicle also.

I've towed my bronco loaded on a steel flatbed 18 ft trailer plus camping equipment, spare parts, tools, and an extra set of tires behind my '97 expedition and it works fine. Some things to watch out for:
- when it's all loaded up the rear sits a little low so I try and avoid night driving as the headlight angle isn't optimal (you can add lift bags to help offset the problem)
- I added a tranny cooler and a brake controller (must use trailer brakes with a heavy load like an EB)
- I've got the 5.4 liter engine and use the overdrive when I tow as long as it doesn't have to hunt for more gear. The manual advises to turn the OD off, but the high engine revs at 65 mph and the 8-9 MPG sucks so I use the overdrive and get 10-11 MPG at 65 mph. Some folks have advised it will ruin the tranny but I've been towing for 15 years and have about 170k on the truck (same tranny), with at least 10k-15k of those 170k towing the EB.
- No you probably won't make it over Vail Pass fully loaded, but small hills and flat roads are just fine.

It will never compare to a diesel when it comes to pulling a load, but it also won't cost anywhere what a diesel costs either.

Good luck

If you get a weight distributing hitch it will help level the tow vehicles chassis, and do a fairly good job keeping the headlights level. What the hitch does is take hitch ball weight and transfer it to the front axle. Makes the tow vehicle handle more like a 5th wheel. A properly set up weight distributing hitch will put the effective load over (or slightly in front of) the rear axle.

I run full width D60 and 14bolt, with cage, 435, 205, and 351 and mine weighted in at 5100 loaded with gas and tools.

I HATE pulling with my Expedition. The most I tow with it is my Echo trailer with three ATV's, and if left in overdrive it'll shift down for every over pass (5.4ltr). I know where you live... (Utah) we have to climb a pass everywhere you go. Soldiers Summit will be fun both ways. Sadine, Parley's, and climbing up south of Nephi there's no way around it. Just don't expect to break any speed records. It'll pull it, but make sure your cooling system is up to the job.

I weighed mine in at 5250 lbs. That's loaded with trail tools and with out me in it, all the details are in my sig. line. With the top and doors I figure it would be close to 5700 lbs.

When mine still had 1/2 ton's under it and 35's I pulled it with my 03' Expedition and it did fine. I babied it and only got 10.5 mpg. The towing was pretty much flat with moderate hills, of coarse I'm in Missouri so there is nothing flat here compared to the rest of the states. I agree on the tranny cooler and maybe even a temp gauge if you are going to be hauling it often.
