what is this electrical connector for?

It's located on the drivers side of the manual transmission near the front, just in front of the 2-3 shift lever. I've got two trannys and they both have this "sending unit" looking thing.

That was my thought, but the back up light switch is on the column.
Sorry I don't have pictures right now.

You mean like the red one on this 5 speed? That is the reverse switch on this M5OD.

Because yours is a '72, if it's the stock 3-speed trans it's the "ambient switch" which some '72's and '73's had.
Do you have a hole in your driver's hinge pillar up high? Some have a cover plate, some have the sensor, and by now many just have a hole.

"ambient switch" purpose?

Is that another way to be sure you can't start engine unless trans is in neutral? Or maybe clutch pushed in?
