I just opened it up and readjusted #3 and 4....all 4 rockers. Put it back together and same noise. I didn't do 1 or 2 because it really sounds like its coming from 3 or 4.

Not sure on the studs...I think they are threaded.

Damn airbur...didn't mean to steer you wrong. Hard to tell on video what sound is....

I doubt the aftermarket head have the thermactor holes for the emissions system as stock heads but may want to double check that too...

Good luck

I'm 1000 miles away but it sounds like exhaust...if any of your header flange bolts were 1/2 turn loose, I'm guessing you wasted a gasket in the first 3 minutes of run time.

Keep us posted after tomorrow's brkfst diagnosis.

You could test the exhaust leak scenario with the hose.
I don't like to do it when it's super hot, but since you have the noise immediately upon startup, you could spray water all over that header pipe and exhaust in that area to see if the tone or volume changes.
Get all around and shoot some up from underneath too.

If you do that before you head over for those extra eyes and ears, that might give everyone some more clues to work from.
Nothing like extra eyes-n-ears on a project!

Good luck.

It really sounds like exhaust... I have seen headers come right out of the box that would require doubling up gaskets to get them to seal. I can't remember which headers you went with, but I got the ones with the thickest flange available just for that reason...

Also, my exhaust guy left one of my O2 sensor loose... Freaked me out at first, but I got lucky while working under the truck. I accidentally kicked the exhaust and heard a rattle. Went back and checked every nut and bolt until I found it.

Since just finishing my motor build... I bet I have read 10 or 20 threads about ticking noises, blown rebuilds and other problems... Really keeps me on edge listening to mine when I drive it.

Good luck with whatever it is!

Here is a gasket comparison to what I have (Edel7227) and what is recommended (FelPro 1487). I think there is enough difference to say I should have gone with the FelPros. I'd think there'd be other leaks as well though.

FelPro:

I have never seen those Fel-Pro gaskets... Kinda looks like a universal gasket... That being said, the Edelbrocks are good gaskets.

It will be a pain... But I would recommend you pull the header. If it is leaking, you will be able to see it on the gasket. It will either be blown out or have heat/exhaust marks spanning across the gasket surface.

For what it's worth eric I too have a slight tick on the driver side since day one. Also running sanderson Headers Interesting to see what you find out. I assumed it was my rv cam with the gt40 heads and running an older block/ firing order.

Frankly, if Sanderson says it can run without one, I'd try that anyway. After all, the stock cast-iron manifolds didn't use a gasket because the surfaces were (originally at least) smooth enough and rigid enough to seal iron-to-iron with no leaks for literally decades.

I'd be curious if Sanderson says it's "just acceptable" or it's actually "recommended" to use no gasket?

I found a loose plug that was definitely spewing stuff....tightened it up but the noise remains. I think I had 2 issues there....now it sounds like a noisy rocker again.

It's a long shot, but could you have a rocker arm banging into a valve cover baffle?

The covers are very tall. There is a baffle under the oil fill tube you see in the video. I checked the underside 2 different times and can't see any marring or wear marks. Still is a possibility though.

Not the baffle with your valve covers... Assuming you are running 1.6 or 1.7 rockers there should be plenty of room. Still sounds like exhaust to me though...

The header is still removable enough to eliminate that as the culprit. Other solutions start to get deeper... Bad lifters, bad springs etc...

Thanks.....I've actually found a small leak but its on the opposite side on the exhaust tube. I don't this this is causing the noise.

I'll order those gaskets and try it out. Thanks

With that little leak being so close to the O2 sensor it's probably the reason that bank adds 1-2% more fuel.
