Yep.....most likely. Once I install the steering and get the new header gaskets on I'll drive it up and have them seal it.

Have you used a stethoscope yet? Amazing how much easier it is to fine-tune your search with one. Narrows down the possibilities quite a bit, in most cases.

And what about the water test I mentioned the other day? If you do it before the exhaust is totally warmed up, there's no danger of you cracking anything. Isn't usually with headers anyway, but I never liked spraying a lot of water on a super hot exhaust or head anyway. Just paranoid that way I guess.
But doing it while it's cooler, you can put a large volume of water all around the exhaust manifold and it's sealing surfaces to see if the sound changes or goes away.

Worth a shot anyway. It's cheap and quick.

I didn't try the water idea.....but its a good one. Instead I just removed the gasket and for all those that guessed exhaust leak....you win.

The new Earls gaskets are on their way.

What do I win?? LOL

I am shocked to be honest. That is worse than I thought it would be. I will assume they were torqued properly... I guess the MFG of the headers was wrong about using them without gaskets. IMHO- you couldn't put enough gasket sealer, or enough torque to make those seal without gaskets.

Post up some pics of the Earls when you get them.

Yea....not sure. I think high temp RTV may work better but who knows. I took the other one off also and it was in the same condition.

Excited to fire it up with no tapping!

I guess anything is possible, but in my younger years, I witnessed two guys try high temp RTV and both times it was blown clean out...

Earls are great. Used them for over 11 yrs on a set of headers.

Did you test the header flange for flatness before installation? Common problem on headers blowing gaskets is the flange isn't flat. No amount of tightening will cure that issue. Lay a straight edge on them...

I've got the same tapping issue on my new 5.0 install. Had 1 big backfire on initial start up. Checked all header bolts, they were tight. Guess I'll be headed to parts store today for a new set of aluminum header gaskets. Thanks for the info!

Go with the Earls gaskets that have the replaceable seals like I used. They are awesome.
