I need advice on how to determine which exhaust system to buy. I want a little growl in it but not a roar. It'll be a daily driver and I'm not trying to turn heads with the exhaust.

So let me know What you use and how it sounds.

I actually stuffed a 70 series (one of them) under the passenger seat. It did a good job. By no means was it stock quiet, but it was quiet enough to hear the massive wind noise.

Exhaust sound is such a mystical art. Different engines and different exhaust systems will make such completely different sounds. I was trying to louden up a truck at work once so I disected a new muffler, found a single wall that seperated inlet from outlet. Took the actual muffler, cut the top off, cut that wall out, welded the top back on. installed in the truck it looked 100% stock. And sounded 99% stock. You could see daylight through that muffler. Still quiet as could be. Took off the exhaust after the cats, loud, evil, nasty noises. just a bit of pipe and and a hollow can made a church mouse out of it. Some aftermarket muffler and back to uncivilized beast. Sound clip at the 55 second mark and you will hate that sound on the highway. We did another and open pipe and a pair of little glass pack resonaters, we expected to be loud and obnoxious, the perfect shop truck. Absolutly perfect. It does drone at highway speeds but the idle is just enough to let you know it is there and when you get on it there is a pleasent sound that is a bit more civilized that the sound clip, but you can still hear it a couple blocks away.

Engines will also have a huge influence on sound. Compression and valve timing are huge influences to what an exhaust sounds like. I have alwyas had to play a little to get the exhaust I wanted on every project. I have never found just the right choice on the first go around.

My ranger project probably got the most extensive tuning of an exhaust system I ever did. The final version was one of the neatest ones I ever did. Took a stock replacment muffler for some Dodge truck. And put a turbo wastegate (some cheapy eBay part) to open a second bypass channel around the muffler. I had so much fun with that! It was like being back in highschool again. Drive around relitivly peaceful, push the button and the crackle of a straight pipe. Kept a picture of it.

I run a flowmaster Hushpower & love it! Not the load drone of a 40 series but a nice throaty tone. Also really compact & easy to mount above the frame rails for clearance.

I have delta 40's. I wanted a loud roar. Here is a clip I took from breaking in the engine(don't make fun of the mufflers i couldn't wait to start the engine for the first time and quickly set them up). The end of the clip, around 2:05, has the engine running just a little higher than idle. Nice throaty sound....I don't think I'll be putting a stereo in, between the wind noise and engine I probably won't hear the music anyway. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmMUFJPOlFc

Actually the engine is my music. :)

Why limit yourself to Flowmasters, I run Magnaflows and they fit the bill nicely.
Soft mild sound when idiling and cruising, Nice sound out the back when you get on the pedal..

@Fungus - Thanks for lead on Hushpower - I might go that route.

Some pics. 2 into 1. 2.25" from the collectors into a 3" Y pipe. 2.5" muffler back.

I have two 3 chamber FMs on my 88 Mustang Track car
Pypes on my DD 2009 Mustang
Magnaflow on my 2003 Cobra Mustang
4" Banks on the Super Duty
two 3 chamber FMs on my Bronco with CATs

Each one has a different sound... The track car is loud, but I am only in it for 25 minute sessions. The 2009 has a nice sound, rumble but not bad for a DD. The Cobra is loud when you are on it. The Bronco rumbles but is quiet because of the CATS. When you are 20 loud is good, when your near 50 loud and drone is bad... except in the track car cause it is only for 25 minutes

Lots a variables, as stated above... You might want to list a few things about your motor to help the group decide... Cam, headers, carb, single or dual exhaust wanted, and where will it dump out.

You should have seen the head scratching when I took it in to get emissions tested;D
They stuck there heads under there and couldn't make sense of it. Had to do a little demo for them. Probably the first person who un-corked the exhaust for a sniffer test.

Ok, the original 302, mild cam, ceramic headers, EFI, and don't actually care which brand I run. It's a daily driver, I don't want it loud but would like a little rumble when I'm on the throttle. I'm 43 and would rather hear the radio than the muffler, I'm putting some money in sound deadening the build. But I've always like the rumble when excelerating.

So tell me what's worked for you guys.
