So I am building the mount for the hydraulic winch. Getting ready to set the flair head into position. It occurs to me I have no idea what direction to spool the cable onto the winch. It will make a difference in the position of the flair head. So here is the question. Should the cable come off the top of the drum or the bottom of the drum? Or does it matter?

A little help please?
Thanks

Mine spools on to the right. ;)
On a hydraulic setup it probably doesn't matter. On an electric you can see which way the spool turns when you hit the IN button.

Well Phil, at least yours is right;D
Hydraulic is power either way and I can change it at the valve if I want to. I was just wondering because it would work a lot better design wise if the cable came off on the top of the spool. I suppose it would be easier to get a finger caught up in the top of the roller than the bottom. Any other reasons why I can't spool it from the top?

Look at the way the winch is mounted. Bolts are stronger in shear than they are under tension. If the winch is mounted/bolted down low it would be better to have the cable spooled low.

Winch is mounted in the center of the spool in the horizontal plane. 4 on the front and 4 on the back. However I agree completely with your statement.

Looks like it is more on the lower half than the center so I guess in from the bottom is what I should do. That is going to mess up my design.
Thanks for the help. off to the drawing board

Uh oh, To much thinking going on. fact is if I mount anything across the mounting holes it will be in the way of the winch cable if it is wound from bottom in. So back to the top.
Thanks for the help.

Who says the mounting plate has to go all the way across the front or can't be slotted?

I may be off but I think that the worm gear has a loaded direction (stronger) an a unloaded direction, but i have been wrong before.

This is a old school dealer installed Warn winch that was on my truck when I got it, I've seen a couple of other Broncos with the same kind of bumper, the winch was only attached to the bumper in the front, I have a newer Milemarker hydraulic that I'm eventually installing, it has all the bolts underneath.. Seems like the one you have might installs with the bolts in the front?

The hydrolic winches on my wreckers all go over the top. My electric winch that I'm getting ready to put on the bronco goes under.

For vertical mounting (old bellview or Warn 8274 for example) The spooling direction does not matter. For the Bellview it is power in only so there is only one option.

For the more modern horizontal mounted winches it should pull closest to the mounting plate. It puts less stress on the mounting hardware. Pulling on the top adds the drum into the leverage of trying to pry the winch off the mounting plate.

But on many winches there is a brake built into them. You must mount the winch so power in is NOT fighting that brake.
