Hi,

We are thinking about taking about 4 days this winter break, flying into Texas somewhere, renting a car and blasting around for 4-5 days. What are must do things for myself, wife and 9 year old boy. I have been to Padre, been on the USS Lexington, and spent a day in San Antonio.. That is it. We like nature, national parks, history, culture, etc. Not as much restaurants, sporting events, etc.. Anyway, lay it on me.

Thanks, Pete

I'd go to Stephenville and hang out wit PaPitt. It sounds like he has a lot of fun at his place.

Come out west in my neighborhood. Southwest Texas. Amistad National Recreation Area (Amistad Lake), Seminole Canyon State Park (oldest rock art paintings in North America). And if truly adventurous Big Bend National Park.

One day in San Antonio doesn't even come close to seeing all the sites and visiting all the historic places. Plus if you pick the right day you could go to the AT&T Center and watch the World Champion Spurs beat up on some other bunch.

I liked it. What about Austin or Dallas? I am leaning towards Big Bend and the other National areas as my son is big into the Junior Ranger Program. Probably no boot scooting on our itinerary..

Fredericksburg and the hill country. Hidden Falls park is about an hour from there, you can rent 4 wheelers etc. Pretty country side. A whole bunch of wineries as well.

67RT... OK Pa Pitt here. I love that go to Pa Pitt's for fun in Texas. Wonder what I can charge for that!!! A day with & old Fart!!!.
.. Yes 4 days to get from some towns in Texas to others. So I guess it depends if you fly into Dallas of if you fly into Houston.
... I'm going to say fly into Austin.. See the Capital .. Stepping into it . Can really send chills down your Spine as to whose foot prints your standing in. Lots of great leader have passed through that building.
..... Get out of Austin as fast as you can. Except you might take in the LBJ Library ..sorry but he shook my hand & gave me an award as a 13 year old kid & Head toward the Hill country Fredericksburg .. Lots of bed & breakfast in that area . I ask my wife & she said they really decorate for Christmas. & I REALLY LIKED THE Numrich Museum It takes a full day to see it all. German food . ''which sucks'' but It's authentic . Deer everywhere you look.. Then choose your path .. OH you've got to have reservations every where you go . Even to eat on the weekends. Think ahead.... Keerville... The lakes area .. Ingram ..... This is the pretty part of Texas . There is a high way called the Devils Back Bone . Ends or starts around Salado .. it takes about 4 hours to drive but you just can't believe Texas has this scenes located in it .. It' best on a BIKE ''Harley'' in the early summer or late spring . Don't plan to drive but about 45mpg. Around the Lakes area you'll see a lot of Bald Eagles at certain time of the year. I've never got to see them But when they are there they give boat rides out onto the lakes to see them. Inks.. Marble Falls .Buchanan.. & More deer.. Lockhart area there are several great BBQ joints . You could even see Willie Nelson .. I did one night . Me & a buddy stopped for BBQ & old Willie was have BBQ & A Lone Star Beer.. BY HIMSELF. We figured he didn't want to hear what PaPitt had to say. But Since I've met him twice & if I'd been willing to stay the coarse He might having listen to Pa Pitts tells. good Old Guy & HE'S JUST A FEW YEARS OLDER THAN I AM.
.... Now those towns are going to be tourist traps shops aimed at the ladies. Stay alert to save your son. But man there is some neat stuff in that area.
.. Just out od Austin is Greene Haul area .& Luckenback . zip code 78647.. Obama retired it.
.......... The Big Bend is fantastic . But if you leave Houston you'll be 3 days returning & most all you saw was a bunch of West Texas flat high way that you can drive 85 on. for about 6 hours.& see 3 towns ..
..... OH YES & IN THAT JOHNSON CITY AREA . You can get a tour of LBJ's home where he was raised . & more BBQ.

If you got up close to me .. Waco DFW Glenrose area. Fossil Rim wildlife part. Outside of Glenrose tx. about 15 miles. Fossil rim is a drive thru park about 3000 ac. & lots of wildlife to see. So you drive thru and see about 50 different kinds of animals you buy a sack of feed when you get your entrance tickets. Then you drive in & the animals come a running . Black BUCK..... DEER..... WILDEBEEST... Elk ... Giraffe .. Mufflon sheep THESE STINK .. Fallow ... Sika .. OSTRICH...BE CAREFUL WITH THESE. kUDA .. & MANY MORE. Get fun for young kids & hunters that missed last year..
..................
.... Oh & Jerry world or ATT Stadium .or CowBoy stadium ... close to XMAS .. LOTS OF TEXAS Friday Night Lights games .. All the High school State Champion ship games are played there. GREAT GAMES iF YOU Like that kind of fun.
.... I'm not a Jerry Jones fan But Man that stadium is Awesome ..

Great tips. We think it may be fro the 29th thru Jan 3. I was also told to go to NM to see white sands and Carlsbad Caverns. We don't mind driving 3 hours a day as long as there is something to look at.
