Ok i got my efi done, swapped in a 96 Explorer 5.0 now Im having trouble with the p/s pump. I got the lines made -6 braided firied up the motor and no p/s. the pump didnt whine like it should with air in it, and no assit at all at the wheel. so I started tracing my lines starting with the pump I dissconnected the line at the pump unhooked the coil wire and turn over the engine the fluid would shoot up but wasnt strong, I did this with every line down to the box the fluid would shoot out only 6 feet at the most, hooked every thing back up and no change. Got a new pump put it on fired it up and had p/s but had a bad leak at the pump pressure fitting so I shut it off and got some new o rings started it back up and now no p/s again. Did the line drill again still no luck, so I got another pump on the way. Anyone got any ideas?

Did you go with a serpentine set up? if so check the routing of the belt, might have the pump turning backwards.

The pump pressure fitting is tricky on that pump. It has to seat to just the right depth. What are you using there?

This is true. I went through the same thing a month ago. I just ground the end of the fitting down all the way to the threads.. works great now.. I need to order the right fitting though

Explorer Power Steering Pump Fitting - NO PRESSURE

I wish someone would post a CORRECTION in the Explorer Serp Tech Article on this - I JUST WASTED AN ENTIRE AFTERNOON REPLACING MY EXPLORER PUMP FOR NO REASON !!!

I used the Russell o-ring fitting: RUS-648060 - and it cuts off almost ALL THE FLOW FROM THE PUMP (and mangles the O-ring)

The only reason I found it is because I didn't tighten the fitting all the way on the second pump, and had great pressure until I ran it all the way down - then NOTHING !!!

Tomorrow I'm going to grind off the bottom of the fitting and go find an aluminum washer - I hope it seals....

I PM'd admin and MarsChariot. If you can provide a detailed description and possibly pictures of the modifications needed to the adapter it may help.

I can certainly write up a detail description and take some pics. I should know if my "fix" works today - I'm planning to cut about 1/4-3/8s off the bottom of the Russell fitting and then use a copper or aluminum washer to seal it to the top of the pump. The rebuilt pump came with some teflon and rubber orings - but none are the correct diameter for the Russell fitting.

It just amazes me that this write-up has been in the tech section for ?2-3years? - and very few have started threads about this problem. I guess it "isn't" a problem if you use the Lee Fitting and washer - which is what I would have done if the Russell wasn't mentioned...

Missing (another ) LEBC round-up because of this problem... not happy....

My problem was the depth of the Russell fitting. I did what you stated(cut off the O-ring part of the fitting and add a crush washer) and it worked great, so I ordered the Lee fitting (which is the same thing) and had no problems since.

Yep - cut the Russell fitting at the bottom of the threads, then went to the parts store to grab an aluminum and a copper washer, I stacked the aluminum washer over the copper washer - it seems to be holding but I've had so much Mercon V sprayed under my hood over the past 2 days - I can't really tell if the fitting is dry or not.

I'm going to order a Lee fitting and washer because I want to make sure I'm getting good flow out of the pump. I'd really like to know the fluid path coming out of the Explorer pump - does the main flow come from the bottom of that fitting well - or does it come from that slot that's cut into the side of the well by the threads? If that Russell o-ring portion (extension) was blocking the flow then I think it must come from the slot?

Well I don't have a Russell adapter to measure but I do have a Lee adapter. The Lee adapter also comes with a tapered aluminum washer. On the Lee the length below the nut is right at 1/2" before the washer goes on.

First pic is Russell, next two are Lee.

Thanks for the Pics. Viperwolf. I think my Russell fitting is still a bit longer than 1/2 inch - even after I cut it off. Mine was cut even with the last thread - so it might be blocking the flow more than it should. I did take a pic of the Russell vs the stock Explorer fitting - now if someone could just teach me how to host and link to pics...

The Lee adapter is Steel, right? The Russell fitting is aluminum. I feel better about 1600 PSI going thru a steel fitting. That aluminum fitting is going to fatigue, eventually.
