This is my 68. It's a 200. About a year ago, I was out driving and she went up in a giant cloud of white smoke. Bummer. I was and am currently working on a 71 frame up so I haven’t had the time or $ to run simultaneous projects. Today I finally had nothing to do because I am waiting on parts and a D20 rebuild. I decided to investigate. Heres what I found.

If you need another one, I have one that was just burning a little oil when I pulled it. You can have it.

If the bores are original..that's an easy rebuild if the block or head are not cracked.;)

‘‘Tis but a scratch.” Head gasket was fine.

Good to know the bores are original. How can you tell? <— Edit Shoot just realized you said “if”

Thanks for the free motor offers. Still waiting for that free coyote offer.

Hi, X2 on checking the head gasket. It looks like burn through between 1+2 and 2+3.
What are the two metal chips on the piston in 1 pic and deck on the other? That looks like trouble.
It also looks like mechanic in a can leak sealer residue, which may "buff out".
I would clean it up and get a head gasket set unless those metal chips are signs of damage. Did something fall into the carb? Is the combustion chamber damaged?
Oversize pistons are marked like .020 or .030. Good luck

Pic 2 almost looks like that could be a carb stud or an air cleaner bolt with one threaded end broke off. Judging from the gouges on the piston it took a beating whatever it is. I would think there would be more damage to the piston though if that's a stud.

I have some free coyotes for you, but you have to catch them yourself.
