I went with the lady last weekend to pick up her 77 and bring it back from the dead. Basic info and pics are here. HERE

It sat in a field for about 10 years, and hasn't run in at least five. It's bone stock minus swapping out the column shift for a floor shift. I know the motor and tranny were fairly fresh before she parked it. The truck is in surprisingly good shape. The drivers side rocker panel is rusted out, but the rest looks pretty good. The door hinges are fubared, & the front end and springs are shot. Aside from that I think it's pretty solid. Don't get me wrong, it needs lots of work...

At the moment I'm searching for signs of life. I put in a new set of plugs. The old ones looked fine, if anything it was running a little rich, not a bad sign I gave each cylinder a short shot of WD40 while I was at it. I also replaced wires, cap & rotor, oil change ect... At the moment it cranks fine, just no spark. I haven't done any troubleshooting yet, but if I had to venture a guess I'd bet that the ignition module is toast. From the outside it looks like it took a long swim in a salt bath. I'd be willing to bet it looks about the same on the inside.

I don't care if it works or not, it's getting replaced based on appearance. My first question is Napa has 2 available a "$25 value" and an "$80 premium" module. My hard earned money leans towards the $80 unit. Is it worth the money or are we paying for the "premium" stamp?

I've done some digging and caught the tail end of some some EFI swap posts. Our end goal is to turn her truck into a street legal well mannered weekend warrior. (I think... ;D ) I've looked into some aftermarket kits. They look nice & all, but I'd rather swap out to a factory system. Is there a popular swap?

For semi proper intros: My name is Justin. I'm more of a muscle car kinda guy I've always loved the 4wd's though. In my teens I found every weak link the hard way in a 78 CJ7 Levis edition. My daily driver is a 95 tbird. She's never let me down. As soon as I get the bronco back on it's own 4 feet I get go pick up my old project. (68 lemans+455=ickybadnasty ;D ) I'm a machinist/gear head If you have a dream part or idea I'm more than willing to help. I can draw up prints and 3D models. I'd make the parts too, but currently I grind quartz glass for semiconductor fab. My shop is not equipped to cut metal. I can probably get a good buddy discount though.

To the powers that be: I apologize if this post is in the wrong forum. My tbird forum has a special place for newbies like me...

Thanks in advance for all my stupid questions...

:D

Welcome - great first post. I'm digging the 70's graphics on the side.

Recommend you upgrade to "contributor status" and start a thread of your buildup. Its a great way to track your progress and a good place for the rest of us to keep at you for updates. ;D

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you have good plans for your rig. You found the right place if you need help along the way. I am pretty new myself and have had lots of good responses to my questions.

Welcome to the site.
As for the module, I've always had good luck with the cheap ones. Just make sure to use some dielectric grease on the connector terminals. You should check the stator in the distributor also. It should have 400-800 ohms between the orange and purple wires. The coil should have 1-2 ohms on the primary side (+ and - terminals) and 7,000 to 9,000 ohms on the secondary side (- and tower). Also make sure you are getting 12v to the neg. side of the coil with the ignition on, engine off.

The beast LIVES!!!

I was right, the ignition module was junk. I got the cheap one per viperwolf and it worked great. The fuel pump took a dive after about 20 min or so, no surprise there...

I'm not cool enough to post any pics here just yet. I added more pics & info to the link I posted at the top.

Next on the list of things to do is find a new intake manifold, get fresh oil in the tranny transfer and rear, drop the fuel tank and flush or replace. Then take it for a spin and start work on the suspension.

I can't tell you how happy I am to hear it run...

Any tips on the tranny and transfer? I'm in new territory I saw drain plugs, but where do I fill it and with what?

Thanks!

Good job getting it running. not sure on the tranny - d20 has a fill plug a couple of inches higher than the drain - on the back side.

How do I know what transmission and transfer in the truck?

I know it's a stupid question, but cut me some slack, I'm still a n00b... I know it came with a column shift and was swapped out to a floor shift of some sort. Is there anything I should do to service the transmission other than get fresh oil in it?

The factory only put ford 3-speed manual trans or C4 autos. If it's been swapped then it could be almost anything. Dana 20 was the original transfer case.
If the trans is working fine then an oil change (and filter if auto) is all you need.

It's been swapped, almost anything is exactly what I was thinking too...

All I know is it's a manual and it's now a floor shift. From what I can tell it's either a 3 speed or a 4 speed, it's hard to tell without the truck running.

Hey Captn'

Check out the Lonestar Early Bronco Club (see the link at the bottom of my post). Lots of guys in Austin, TX. that can set you in the right direction for getting the bronco going. There is a email list that you can sign up for to get in touch with the local guys there. It is an awesome group of guys and between this website and the LEBC you won't have any question unanswered with the right info. I have gotten lots of help from both sources. Good luck with the project! BTW there is a local bronco parts vendor just outside of San Antonio, BCbroncos (see the link at the top of this page). Chuck and Jason are the owners and they can help you even more. Jason is on the LEBC email list often. Also it helps to get the ol' stand by Haynes manual to for general and detailed info.

Thanks for the info joe we'll definitely be in touch...

It's still got the factory 3 speed. It's just been converted from a column shift to a floor shift. For now it works, I think... Haven't done a road test yet...

Like I mentioned earlier the fuel pump and carb took one for the team after 20 min of running. I found a great deal on a new 600 cfm edelbrock performer. I'm looking for a good 4 barrel intake to put it on. I'm also looking for a new fuel pump... Will a stock pump feed the 4 barrel or do I heed to step up to something else?

Any thought's on my fuel pump/ intake search?

Stock pump will work fine. I upgraded to a higher gpm pump and then had to add a pressure regulator to drop back down to a usable pressure for a Performer. You can usually find a performer intake used firf a reasonable price. They are hard to wear out but pay attention that it has not been overtorqued on the end bolts which can crack the intake!
