So I haven't been on the site for a looong time and haven't driven My 68' near enuf. Water pump/ timing covers leaking, lifters ticking, clutch chatters bla bla bla. Buying a 96' Explorer 5.0 for it for now and want to put a carb and distributer on it. What balancer do I need to change to? Changing cam out with something better, do I need to change distributer gear? Can I use stock Bronco flywheel? Sorry for long post and thanks in advance!

i belive, and others will correct me but:
1. 50 oz. balancer will be needed
2. you will need a steel gear to match the Explorer cam
3. Flywheel needs to be matched to balancer

May I inquire on why you are converting an EFI engine to carburation?

Just trying to keep everything as close to stock appearing as possible. More I read about this more I'm thinking i may just freshin up the 289 and run it, prob same amount of money.

Well from your original post that is what I had thought. I would just take the engine I had, dismantle it, freshen it up and put it back together. Your conversion idea is difficult. I would much rather just repair an old engine. Then again, this topic comes up all the time on Ford Truck Enthusiast forums. Somebody wants to know how to convert a late model roller engine to carburation. They either end up with duraspark or a Mallory dual points distributor.

Here's what I see:
"Water pump/ timing covers leaking, lifters ticking, clutch chatters..."

objectives:
-Waterpump/timing cover-leak
-lifters ticking
-clutch chatters

how is the compression and vacuum?

From a cost stand point, overhauling this older engine would not be expensive. From a labor stand point I can see why one would just get a used but healthier engine and perform an engine swap.

This was my thought. Figured I could easily swap out a low mileage later model 5.0 but apparently not. Haven't done compression tests or anything but the po mentioned it had been rebuilt but who knows. Starts and runs just fine just little issues I want to handle...well maybe not so little now! Thanks for the replys btw.

I/m using the entire explorer engine from the fan thru the flexplate. i'm using an edelbrock intake and a 1985 mustang gt manual tranny distributor which costs about 50.00. I.m using my bronco's stock manifolds and a holley ta carburator
