Bench test fuel level sending unit?

I pulled my rear tank to clean it up and install a rear seat. I pulled the sending unit and I'll be the first to admit I don't know a whole lot about the electrical aspects of vehicles. Can I bench test the sending unit before re-installing it? Thanks in advance.

Just make sure you wear gloves, safety glasses and have a fire extinguisher with current inspection tag on hand...

Seriously, absolutely yes. An ohm meter is your friend. Between center terminal and ground. Others more on their game than me can give you specific resistance values for full and empty, but it's a good check to verify function since you have access to it.

Below is a handy-dandy fuel sender ohm reading. If you have the stock original sender your values should be somewhere in the neighborhood of the values shown for the stock sender. If not....good luck! The repros are terrible, as you can see.

yes I hooked up my sender with a couple jumper wires and checked it. carefully measured what its travel would be in the tank. but mocked it up and tested outside the tank.

Thanks for that. Most helpful.
