Type transmission vs Dana 20 shifter location

This is more of a body work timing issue. But if switching between transmissions such as a 3 speed manual to a aode does you have to patch and move shifter cut outs for the Dana 20?

Good question. I can't remember the last time this was discussed. I think in some cases the change is minimal to none. But with others, it's moved back a smidge.
But have you already made your transmission choice? Will it be the AODE or could it be something else? And body lift, or not?

And by "body work timing" do you mean that you're having your body painted soon, but don't have all the potential mods done?
If so, personally I'd wait until ALL the mechanical work and decisions have been finalized and made and mocked up, before committing to paint. Even when it's all thought out, there are still times when you have to cut something that has new paint, because you changed plans or forgot something.
You probably knew that already. But I'm bringing it to the top anyway.

Thanks. I think I already knew what you said on both points about it will move a bit and you have to mock it up first. Some part of me was hoping for the easy response of the hole will always work which I know is never the deal. Right now plan is 3 speed manual to 4r70w. If that happens, a lot more will be happening ....

Seems like best order is to get body done and in weld through primer but go ahead and have bottom finished in black. Get it back on frame and fit everything. Then disassemble for paint. Bottom can be touched up at then end of the job.

I am not a paint expert. but I recall that primer doesn't really protect the metal under it. It just helps the paint stick to the metal. There is a sealer that puts a barrier to protect the metal. If you are going to pause body work I would search sealers to protect the metal. You can still rework sealed metal and spot seal.

The shifter hole trimming depends on a couple of things, including body lift.
