SOS No room for Air Under Hood

Hi everybody! I am finally at the finish line for the Bronco project! The last thing that I did not count for is at the top of the Edelbrock performer head, there is no space between the hood and the head for an air filter. I originally was going to put a cold air induction system, but the angle would be too sharp to pipe. Then I bought a 13 inch Ford performance racing circular air filter and that hit the bottom of the hood. The only thing that I can think of is to do a bigger body lift. Right now I have a 2 inch lift and it’s perfect but I think I might have to go to 3 1/2? Other than that the only other thing is to get a hood scoop which I really really really do not want to do. Any suggestions??

I run an Edelbrock air gap which is taller than a performer with a 1" body lift kit and have plenty of room. I did swap out the Heavy duty motor mounts back to factory motor mounts as they raised the engine about an inch. I also used a dropped base air cleaner similar to this one. The one I originally purchased isn't available from where I bought it anymore

I've read other people with tight clearances have had to cut the cross brace under the hood to make room, but mine fit.

AZ73 has the right line on this. You lose an 1" with the extreme motor mounts and really the drop base air cleaner is the best work around if you don't want to run a fiberglass hood with a raised section or a hood scoop. You can make it work, plenty of rigs out running your setup or similar.

^^^This^^^ I put in an Edelbrock dropped base cleaner housing which solved my clearance problem. FYI, I had to use a banjo fuel line fitting to get the fuel line clearance. You can get these at Edelbrock too.

I have no body lift and run a Weiand street warrior which I believe is same height as edelbrock. I use the edelbrock drop aircleaner and it just fits with minimal scraping.

The original post is horribly confusing. The best I can decipher, he is calling the intake manifold a head. It isn't. You can run aftermarket (cylinder) heads, that does not change anything in regards to engine height. Intake manifolds change engine height.

What engine are you running? 302 or 351? The 351 sits taller as the block is taller, even though both use the same cylinder heads.
Which Performer intake are you using? From the overall vaugness of the post, there is a good chance that he is running one of the taller Performer intakes. In the old days there was only one Performer, now that are a half dozen different versions.
What are you using for fuel delivery? Carb, what model? EFI, what version? Is there a spacer or carb adaptor added?
As pointed out above, some motor mounts will sit the engine up higher than others.

A 2" body lift should give plenty of clearance. I could almost run a 351W with a performer intake and extreme mounts and the top of a 14" drop base K&N filter was barely above the hood line, without a body lift. It was an old school Performer, not the air gap, not an RPM.

So give us ALL the details.

Sorry. Barely slept for almost a day and half. Too much going on. Yes, the intake manifold not the head. It’s a 351w stroker. I’m trying to avoid any hood scoops but if the eBay option he sent doesn’t work then we will do a body lift and that should work. Changing motor mounts etc will be a lot of work

351 does make it tighter. I have seen them fit without a body lift under a stock hood. But you really need the perfect mix of parts. Stock cast iron intake, usually quoted from a van. But there is no way that will ever keep up with a stroker. You typically gain flow as the intakes get taller. I have not looked up the intakes available for the 351 in a long time. I think Summit will let you search by height. I was poking around not long ago looking for a low profile 302 intake for a boat project, just to see what existed. I don't have measurements of the engine room yet, so I don't really know what my constraints are. So I quit looking. But I know where to look later when I do get my window.

I think you will be fine with a Performer intake. Might consider getting it ported for better flow to match the stroker.

This is a very low mount system.

I think this was from a 98’ Grand Cherokee. I’ve got the air box mounted where the windshield washer tank was. Also a 351W.
